Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon

Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon

Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon was the result of a compromise between Nintendo and Philips after they failed to release a CD-ROM-based add-on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was developed together with Link: The Faces of Evil and is the first game in which the eponymous princess Zelda is playable. The Wand of Gamelon differs from most traditional Zelda games in that it is a platformer with a side-scrolling view, similar to The Adventure of Link. Levels are accessed from a world map, and more become available when Zelda clears an area or defeats a boss. The game has taken a lot of criticism and is not recognized by Nintendo as part of the series.

Story

King Harkinian announces his plan to help Duke Onkled of Gamelon, who is under attack by Ganon, and orders Zelda to send Link to help if she doesn't hear from him within a month. A month passes with no word from the king, so Zelda sends Link to find him. Unfortunately, he is also missing, so Zelda, accompanied by her older nanny Impa, sets out for Gamelon to find both Link and the king. While Zelda is on Gamelon, Impa learns that King Harkinian has been captured and Link has been involved in a battle whose outcome is unclear. During her adventures on the island, Zelda defeats many of Ganon's henchmen and frees a woman named Lady Alma, who gives Zelda a water bottle that she claims Link gave her in exchange for a kiss. When she reaches Duke Onkled's palace, it turns out that the duke has betrayed the king and is working for Ganon. Zelda storms the palace, killing Ganon's henchmen and rescuing a prisoner named Lord Kiro (sometimes called Fari), who used to work for King Harkinian. Kiro reveals to them the secret entrance to Uncle's chamber, and when they confront him, he reveals to them the entrance to Reesong Palace, where Ganon has taken up residence. Zelda travels to the shrine of Gamelon to get the wand she needs to defeat Ganon, and then makes her way to Reesong Palace, where she fights him. After disabling Ganon with the wand, she rescues her father. Back at Hyrule Castle, Duke Onkled is handed over to the king, who begs him for mercy. He is arrested and the king orders him to scrub all the floors in Hyrule as punishment. Although Link's whereabouts are still unknown, a remark by Lady Alma prompts Zelda to throw her mirror against the wall. They start laughing, because everything is good again.
