Ultima VII: The Black Gate

Ultima VII: The Black Gate

It has been two centuries since the Avatar last appeared in our good kingdom. Some have written that it is finally possible to interpret the stories of the Avatar as they should be, with the proper historical perspective. Others argue that the truth about what actually happened is fading with time, and that we have a responsibility to preserve the legends as we now know them. Most agree, however, when it comes to a number of basic theories. While some claim that the stories of the Avatar are only myths, virtually all credible scholars say that at least some elements of the Avatar's stories are historical fact. In fact, one need look no further than the Island of the Avatar to find very convincing evidence that the Avatar actually existed - at least as a person, if not as a spiritual being! It is very likely that there was more than one Avatar. All scriptures insist that the Avatar who negotiated the peace between Britannia and the Gargoyles is one and the same person who appeared many years ago to defeat the wizard Mondain. Although it is very unlikely, historians do not deny the possibility that there was only one Avatar. After all, our sovereign monarch, the wise Lord British, has displayed amazing longevity himself! Whatever interpretation of history may prove correct, it seems undeniable that the Avatar will not return to our fair kingdom. To all appearances, the age of magic is coming to an end. As mages become increasingly unreliable and the kingdom turns away from the magical arts, it is doubtful that extreme dangers - which can only be defeated with the help of an Avatar - will ever return to Britannia. And that's just as well. We live in the age of community, where you don't just wait for a heroic savior when a crisis hits. In this less spectacular but more practical age, we depend on solving our problems with our own wits and our own will.

Story

A long era of peace has passed in Britannia without any major threats disrupting people's lives. Yet something is not right in the land. Magic seems to be dying and the mages are going mad. The people are unhappy and feel spiritually empty and cheated out of their lives. A new sect called "The Fellowship" is increasing its membership among the lower classes and securing influence through its prominent members, who are rising to leading positions in society. The player is once again the avatar. One evening, a demonic red face appears on the Avatar's computer screen on Earth and announces its impending rule over Britannia. Alarmed, the Avatar consults the stone circle and finds a moongate that sends the hero to Trinsic. Once there, it turns out that a brutal murder has taken place. During his investigations, the Avatar learns of similar murders in the past and comes across more such murders on his journey. The community becomes increasingly suspicious - especially their leader Batlin. In addition, a mysterious voice appears at regular intervals, giving the Avatar dubious advice. After many dangers, the Avatar is finally reunited with the Time Lord, who reveals to him the true nature of recent events: The Fellowship is the puppet of the red-faced being, the Watcher. The Guardian has devised a plan to enter Britannia through a black moongate, using three blackrock generators to spread his influence before his arrival. The Avatar destroys the generators and then rushes to the Isle of the Avatar to prevent the Black Gate from being completed. In a brutal battle with Batlin and the fugitive assassins, the latter are brought to justice while the former escapes by teleportation. Just before the Guardian can get through, the Avatar destroys the gate. Britannia is saved at the cost of the Avatar being stranded in the realm, leaving the Guardian an ominous threat of further unrest and destruction. Thus begins the Age of Armageddon, which continues in Ultima Underworld II and Ultima VII, Part Two: Serpent Isle.
