Ultima Online

Ultima Online is the result of Richard Garriott's idea of a fantasy game with several thousand players, who can all play in a shared fantasy world. It founded the genre of MMOs and showed the industry that MMOs are the next era of games.

Story

In the earliest times of the Age of Darkness, found only in the oldest manuscripts, lived a world dominated by mystical arts and ancient sorcery: Sosaria. Despite Sosaria's enchanted origins, people shunned magic, for its use corrupted the souls of the unwary. But one man dared to awaken the slumbering powers of alchemy. He harnessed the immense power of the Gem of Immortality and cast a spell over all of Sosaria: Mondain the Sorcerer. His power was absolute, and the entire planet was caught in his cruel embrace. Only the appearance of a stranger saved Sosaria from impending doom. Where he came from no one knows, but his power and courage were incomparable. In this stranger lay Sosaria's only hope. Only a traveler from the stars could free this world from Mondain's vile stranglehold. He would prove himself a savior, break the gem of immortality, and defeat Mondain. But... With the destruction of the Gem, a deeper and more sinister evil was unleashed, for Sosaria was not free of the Stone's power. The planet was still bound to the magic of the gem, even as it lay broken on the floor of Mondain's castle. For within each broken remnant of the jewel dwelt a perfect image of Sosaria.... Such is the world in which you are born, live and die. Britannia, which was once Sosaria, now consists of a thousand worlds, each with its own peoples, history and destiny. This Britannia is just one of many in the multiverse that it is: Ultima Online.
