Twisted Metal
Twisted Metal consists of a series of arena battles against more and more opponents in increasingly larger arenas. These battles culminate in a showdown with the winner of last year's competition, Darkside, who drives a large armored vehicle that fires multiple missiles simultaneously. You can choose from 12 different vehicles to take into battle. Each vehicle has its own driver and special move. The controls consist of gas, brake, "tight turn" (basically a handbrake), and turbo on the front buttons, while the selection and control of the main weapons and machine guns is done via the shoulder buttons. In the arenas, there are weapon pickups to replenish your missile supply, repair stations to fix damage to your car, pedestrians, and marshals armed with either machine guns or rocket launchers.
Story
The game focuses heavily on multiplayer combat, including several online game modes with up to 4 players in split screen and 16 players online. Nuke mode, for example, is a new online game mode where you select a faction to play against an opposing faction. In this mode, each faction has a giant metal statue held in the air by a helicopter that the opposing team must try to destroy. To destroy these statues, the player must kidnap the leader of the opposing team and then sacrifice him to a rocket launcher, which in turn launches a nuclear missile. The person who sacrifices the leader and shoots the missile must control it so that it hits the opposing team's statue in mid-air. To win, the opposing team must repeat the process 3 times before the statue is destroyed. There are four factions: the Clowns, the Dolls, the Skulls and the Holy Men. The former were inspired by Sweet Tooth and Dollface, respectively. The latter are led by Mr. Grimm and the Preacher, respectively.
