Touhou Fuujinroku: Mountain of Faith

Touhou Fuujinroku: Mountain of Faith

Mountain of Faith offers two playable characters, each with three weapon types, but no personalized spell card bombs. Collecting power items increases the number of "option satellites" around the character (four total), which behave differently depending on the character and weapon type. Each character's options also fire bullets and either shift position or stay put in focus fire mode. The scoring system is based on the belief meter, which has a refillable display and a numerical value (minimum 50,000). As long as the gauge is not empty, the player's faith value does not decrease, but the gauge slowly empties if the player does not defeat enemies or collect points. Point items partially replenish the meter, and faith items increase the faith value. Faith value directly affects the point value of point items and spell card bonuses.

Story

BACKSTORY Autumn has come to Gensokyo, and with it to its only shrine, the Hakurei Shrine, a common gathering place for the youkai that was rarely visited by humans. As a result, belief in the deity of the Hakurei Shrine began to fall like the leaves from the trees. During this time, Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine, is visited by a mysterious stranger who claims to represent a god of the mountains and orders her to close the gates of the shrine forever. Reimu is deeply disturbed by this, knowing that the shrine must not be closed because it watches over the great Hakurei border. Marisa Kirisame, her ordinary mage friend, is suspicious and also appropriately bored. PROLOG Depending on who you choose, one of the girls eventually decides to climb Youkai Mountain to confront the mysterious deity behind the threats. MAIN ZENARIO On the way to the mountain, the heroine encounters several of Gensokyo's myriad deities, including the two autumn spirits Shizuha Aki and Minoriko Aki, as well as the curse deity Hina Kagiyama, who tries (unsuccessfully) to drive her away from the dangers of the mountain. As our heroine reaches the base of the mountain and begins to climb it, another youkai appears and tries to get her to leave - Nitori Kawashiro, the valley kappa. After Nitori's equally unsuccessful attempt to get her to leave, she mentions that a god has recently appeared on the mountain, causing some trouble for the tengu and kappa living there. As she climbs the waterfall that feeds the rivers where Nitori has been swimming, the heroine encounters the forces that protect the mountain from outside influences, including Momiji Inubashiri and traditional Tengu reporter Aya Shameimaru, who has been sent by the leaders of Tengu society to investigate because she is familiar with outsiders. Aya resists, but eventually allows the human intruder to continue to the lake where a new shrine, the Moriya Shrine, has been created. As she enters the grounds, she is confronted by a new shrine maid - Sanae Kochiya. Sanae says that both the lake and the Moriya shrine have recently been moved to Gensokyo, and that she intends to collect all the faith of Gensokyo for "Lady Yasaka". This, of course, would mean the end of the Hakurei Shrine, which our heroine opposes, leading to a fight in which Sanae is eventually defeated. At the top of the mountain, our heroine finds a lake surrounded by pillars and Kanako Yasaka. Kanako, the goddess of wind and rain, is trying to gain all the faith of Gensokyo in order to prevent the faith in Gensokyo from declining to the point where the gods lose their power. She believes that if that happens, Gensokyo would fall into chaos. After a long struggle, however, Kanako can be convinced to make peace with the Tengu and Kappa, who also accept her as goddess of Youkai Mountain.
