The House of the Dead

The House of the Dead

The House of the Dead is a first-person, light-weapons arcade game. Players take on the role of agents Thomas Rogan and "G" in their efforts to fend off the dangerous, inhuman experiments of the madman Dr. Curien.

Story

On December 18, 1998, Agent Thomas Rogan receives a brief, disturbing phone call from his fiancée Sophie Richards at the Curien Mansion, the home and laboratory of Dr. Roy Curien, a renowned biochemist and geneticist. Together with his partner Agent G, they arrive at the Curien Mansion amidst a series of ominous incidents and disappearances and immediately discover that the mansion is haunted by hellish creatures. A mortally wounded man gives them a small field journal with information about all of Curien's deadly creations and their weak points. It is used every time the player faces a boss. Curien was obsessed with researching the nature of life and death, aided by the DBR Corporation and her own team of scientists. However, Curien's relentless pursuit of this goal led him to go insane. His behavior became increasingly erratic and the nature of his experiments took a gruesome turn. Curien's plan for his research eventually led him to release his subjects into the world. With no time to lose, they rush into the mansion to find and rescue Sophie. After Sophie suffers life-threatening injuries, Rogan and G continue to infiltrate Curien's mansion and laboratory to bring him to justice and uncover the background of his research. Amidst the chaos wrought by Curien, Rogan and "G" encounter many fearsome foes, including "The Chariot," an undead, armored neo-warrior with a bard oak who fatally wounds Rogan's fiancée Sophie Richards before the player confronts him in battle, and "The Hanged Man," a winged, bat-like creature. The Hanged Man captures Sophie in the early stages of the game before stealing away via the mansion. In the third chapter, the AMS agents confront Curien, who releases the Hermit, an eight-legged spider-like creature that spits balls of cobwebs at them, allowing Curien to escape to his laboratory. When the AMS agents encounter Curien a second time, they encounter his masterpiece, the Mage, a humanoid demon-like creature that controls fire. After Curien frees the creature from its incubation chamber, the Mage reveals its self-awareness and refuses to serve any master, whereupon Dr. Curien is killed by his creature. To prevent the magician from escaping from the mansion and destroying the world, Rogan and "G" face the creature in a final battle. They succeed in destroying Curien's monster and receive a final, terrifying warning from the sorcerer. The sorcerer explodes. Rogan and 'G' leave the mansion and take one last look at it from the outside. However, there are alternate endings that the player can reach when he/she completes the game. In one ending, the camera pans into the foyer one last time, the doors open to show Sophie walking toward the camera alive and saying "Thank you!". At another ending, Sophie is now one of the undead - the last corpse left. Characters
