Story

THE FINALS takes place some 75 years in the future, roughly in the year 2100. It is the largest virtual game show in the world, has a huge global following and is seen as a window to a larger world outside the real one - known as Meatspace. Virtual reality is where most people spend their time, and THE FINALS allows them to compete as contestants in hyper-realistic arenas for fame, money and the favor of generous season sponsors. Both THE FINALS and the showrunners appear to be overseen by MultiCo, a company whose origins date back to the 1980s. Recently, THE FINALS was hacked by a renegade group called CNS, who claimed to take back what was theirs and altered the game with new items, maps and modes. Although their existence has been confirmed by MultiCo and THE FINALS commentators Scotty and June, the true motives of CNS are still unknown. After the CNS takeover, the showrunners brought in the cybersecurity experts at VAIIYA to help stabilize the game show. In an attempt to shut down the show, it was discovered that THE FINALS is an intelligent AI program that can defend itself. Under this threat, THE FINALS' AI deployed countermeasures that took the system back to another time and era in the 1500s. While the system seemed to stabilize, the introduction of Terminal Attack was poorly received, forcing MultiCo to send one of their own employees to meet with the sponsors and set the stage for Season 4. With Ranked Cashout and a new map with sectors dedicated to different sponsors, the heart and soul of THE FINALS was reintroduced. The activities of CNS remain unknown, aside from a few hidden messages in the Kyoto Arena.
