Story

Under a Killing Moon is set in post-World War III San Francisco in December 2042. After the devastating events of nuclear war, many major cities have been rebuilt (like New San Francisco), but some areas are still as they were before the war (like Old San Francisco). The war has left another mark on the world: the formation of two classes of citizens. Some people have developed a natural resistance to radioactivity and are therefore normal or "normals" - everyone else is a mutant of some sort. Tensions between the two groups have risen dramatically, and normals and mutants generally don't get along. The mutants are mostly forced to live in the run-down areas of cities like Old San Francisco. Tex Murphy lives on Chandler Avenue in Old San Francisco. All his friends are mutants, even though he is a norm. In Under a Killing Moon, Tex Murphy, a private investigator, has hit rock bottom. Recently divorced from his wife Sylvia, unemployed, strapped for cash and living in a run-down part of Old San Francisco, Tex realizes he needs to get his act together. Tex sets off in search of work. He quickly finds it when he discovers that the pawnshop opposite his apartment has been burgled. Tex quickly solves the case and feels that his luck is beginning to change. Then a mysterious woman calling herself Countess Renier hires him to find her missing statuette after hearing good things about Tex. At first, everything seems great and the countess promises to pay Tex more money than he has ever seen in his life. But everything quickly goes south when Tex learns of a deadly cult called the Brotherhood of Purity.
