Story

Under the protection of the legendary Jedi Order, the Galactic Republic was a bastion of peace in the galaxy for a thousand generations. Several centuries ago, the dark Sith Empire emerged as the greatest threat the galaxy has ever known. After a fierce war, the Republic emerged victorious and the Sith were considered extinct. Nevertheless, the Jedi have since kept a constant vigil over the ancient Sith homeworld of Korriban to protect the galaxy from the darkness that still dwells in the planet's tombs. Although a small group of survivors escaped to warn of the Imperial invasion, it was only a small reprieve for the Republic. Korriban was one of several worlds that fell in the initial assault, and in the years that followed, the Republic suffered many more painful defeats. Emboldened by its many victories, the Empire soon set about conquering the Core Worlds, luring the Republic fleet out of position and launching a surprise attack on the noble world of Alderaan. The valiant resistance on Alderaan roused the spirits of Republic defenders throughout the galaxy, but the balance of power remained in favor of the Empire. This made it all the more surprising when the Imperial Dark Council offered to open peace negotiations with the Republic. Suspecting possible treachery, Republic representatives agreed to meet on Alderaan, but insisted that the Jedi Order mobilize all its resources to ensure comprehensive security. The Jedi agreed, sending most of the Order's high-ranking members to Alderaan and leaving only a token force at the Temple on Coruscant.... After destroying the Jedi Temple and overcoming Republic defenses, Imperial forces occupied Coruscant and held the planet hostage while negotiations resumed on Alderaan. With their capital at stake, Republic representatives had no choice but to agree to the Empire's terms. The Treaty of Coruscant was signed, forcing the Republic to cede control of several star systems and recognize new boundaries of Imperial rule. Although the treaty marked an official end to the war, tensions between the two sides have remained high in recent years, and a return to open war now seems almost inevitable....
