Story

In the two months since Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft and her friend Jonah Maiava have made it their mission to stop the activities of the Trinity paramilitary organization. The two are tracking a cell in Cozumel, Mexico, led by Pedro Dominguez, the head of Trinity's High Council. When Lara enters the nearby tombs being excavated by Trinity, she discovers a temple containing the Dagger of Chak Chel and clues to a hidden city. Murals on the walls refer to the silver box of Ix Chel and warn of the "Purification," a Mayan apocalypse that culminates in a permanent solar eclipse. Lara ignores the warnings and takes the dagger to prevent Trinity from getting it. Dominguez catches her and reveals that Lara has triggered the purification by taking the dagger. He takes the dagger and plans to unite it with the box to stop the Purge and use the power it gives him to remake the world in his image. Lara and Jonah escape a tsunami that destroys Cozumel and foreshadows the coming apocalypse. Despite growing tensions between them over their actions, Lara and Jonah pursue Dominguez into the Amazon. Their plane crashes in the Peruvian jungle during the second cataclysm - a massive storm - and the two find their way to Paititi, the hidden city depicted in the murals. While investigating the tombs there, it turns out that piercing the box with the dagger gives the power of the god Kukulkan, which must be used to stop the Purge. Lara witnesses Trinity soldiers being slaughtered by strange humanoid monsters, later identified as the Yaaxil, the Guardians of the Box. When Lara rescues a boy named Etzli, she and Jonah are taken to Paititi by his mother Unuratu, the queen of the city. Lara realizes that Dominguez is the leader of a Kukulkan cult, and Unuratu reveals that he is her brother-in-law Amaru, who was kidnapped and raised as a child by Trinity to complete the ritual and remake the world in her image. Unuratu directs Lara to the box, but Lara finds that she is not there. Lara and Unuratu believe that the cult already has the box and try to steal it, but Unuratu is captured. Lara also encounters the Yaaxil and their leader Crimson Fire. Lara enters the cult's temple and overhears Amaru telling Unuratu that the box was hidden by Andres Lopez, a missionary sent by Trinity to Paititi during the Spanish conquest of South America. Lara rescues Unuratu and finds that Amaru doesn't quite understand the ritual. The ritual not only empowers Kukulkan, but sacrifices him to prevent the Purge. Unuratu is shot by Commander Rourke, Amaru's second-in-command. Before she dies, Unuratu begs Lara to complete the ritual, but warns her not to let the box affect her. Rourke attacks Lara and Jonah, who are separated when they leave Paititi to decipher the next clue. Thinking Jonah is dead, Lara goes on a rampage, destroying an oil refinery and killing everyone except Rourke, who escapes. She briefly breaks down when she finds Jonah alive, but he manages to calm her down and they decipher the location of the box. Driven mad by the box, Lopez set up a mission near Paititi, where he trained acolytes to complete the ritual. Lara and Jonah find a secret catacomb under the mission that leads to Lopez's tomb and the box. Amaru finds it and forces Lara to hand over the box. He admits that he ordered the death of her father to prevent him from finding Paititi and revealing it to the world. Lara tries to convince Amaru to use the ritual for the good of the world. He refuses because the purification will only affect Paititi. Amaru has used his position in Trinity to manipulate her and prevent the ritual. He leaves Lara and Jonah to escape the third cataclysm, a massive earthquake that triggers a landslide and ruins the mission. Back in Paititi, Lara and Jonah help the newly crowned Etzli lead an attack on an underground temple complex in the center of Paititi. They plan to disrupt Amaru's ceremony while preventing the fourth cataclysm, a volcanic eruption that threatens Paititi. Lara is forced to proceed alone when Trinity cuts off Etzli's forces. She meets the Yaaxil and Crimson Fire and convinces them to help her stop Amaru. Lara takes on the symbolic role of Ix Chel, while Crimson Fire becomes Chak Chel. While the Yaaxil kill Rourke and the Trinity High Council, Lara makes it to the temple summit. She fails to stop Amaru from piercing the box and absorbing Kukulkan's power while an eclipse blocks the sun. Lara overpowers Amaru after a long struggle. When he admits defeat, he transfers Kukulkan's power to Lara as he dies. True to Unuratu's warning, she is tempted to use the box to revive her parents, but instead has Crimson Fire symbolically stab her to sacrifice Kukulkan's spirit and stop the purge. In the aftermath, Unuratu is laid to rest and Jonah decides to take a vacation. Lara stays in Paititi to help Etzli restore the city to its former glory. A post-credits scene shows Lara planning her next adventure at Croft Manor, realizing that her role isn't
