Shadow Hearts: From the New World

Shadow Hearts: From the New World

Shadow Hearts: From the New World is the third official game in the Shadow Hearts series. The game series leaves Europe and focuses on the "New World", America. It isn't directly related to the previous games in the series, but is set in the same universe. The main characters have the task of investigating mysterious "windows" from which vicious monsters emerge. The gameplay follows that of the predecessors: the Ring of Judgment decides the outcome of most battles and many other actions in the game. A new "stock" system was developed for this game, which expands the combo attack system between party members from Shadow Hearts - Covenant and allows double attacks. The "Stock" system works by replenishing a character's stock meter when he/she performs or receives an attack. A maximum of two supplies can be stored. The stockpile can then be used in many ways. For example, when you perform a double attack (a character performs two actions in the same turn) or start a combo, one supply is consumed. A double combo, on the other hand, consumes two supplies. The Judgment Ring system remains essentially the same as in Shadow Hearts: Covenant, with ring customization and additional ring effect items still available. Magic returns in the form of Stellar cards, where characters equip Stellars. The cards are based on the constellations of the twelve signs of the zodiac. Finding and attaching all the Stellars on the cards will give you the Melting Comb Stellar, the strongest non-elemental magic in the game. Fusion is also back in the mix, albeit in a very different way. Unlike Yuri, Shania doesn't have the power of the Harmonixer, with which she can fuse with various demons. She makes spirit pacts with the various guardian spirits and uses their power to transform. Shania can only transform into four forms, but by acquiring fetishes, that is, statues of different animals, she can learn different techniques by charging them. Snapping photos is emphasized even more in this game. Not only can Johnny get enemy data by taking pictures of enemies, he can also exchange the snapshots he gets for prizes. Johnny can also transform himself with the help of Malice's power, though this ability comes quite late in the game.

Story

The game starts in North America in 1929 and has two new main characters: a 16-year-old New Yorker named Johnny Garland and a 21-year-old Indian woman named Shania, who has similar fusion powers to Yuri and Kurando in the previous Shadow Hearts parts, although she is not a harmonizer. She makes pacts with spirits, while Yuri and Kurando became demons. The story begins with Johnny, a private detective, being hired by a man named Gilbert to find a certain Marlow Brown. However, when Johnny finds the man, a mysterious "window" opens and a monster emerges from it. The rest of the game follows Johnny, Shania and co. as they try to find out the truth about Gilbert and his plans. Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, a wanted criminal who was seriously injured is being pursued by the police. He met a mysterious woman who saved him by dispatching his pursuers with ease. Then she healed his wounds with the "Kiss of Malice." No one knows what her intentions or motives are, nor has she spoken a single word. The man who called himself "Killer" called her "Lady" and followed her wherever she went. Later, Shania teams up with Johnny and is accompanied by her guardian Natan to investigate the strange incident that Johnny witnessed. Arriving at Arkham University, they meet Gilbert, who reveals his true intentions to open the gate and cover the world with malice. Gilbert later teams up with Lady and Killer to achieve his goal. Johnny continues his pursuit to stop Gilbert, meeting new allies along the way. These include: Frank; a crazy ninja, Ricardo; a lonely guitarist, Master Mao; a cat who specializes in the Drunken Fist, and Hildegard Valentine, sister of the vampire brothers Joachim and Keith Valentine from the Shadow Hearts series. Together, Johnny and his friends travel the globe to stop the evil plans of Gilbert, Lady and Killer. Along the way, Johnny discovers a shocking truth - that he was resurrected with the help of the Emigre manuscript and that Lady is actually his sister Grace Garland. Her father had revived her after losing her in an accident. He was eventually killed by Grace because she had transferred all her will into Johnny in exchange for his wickedness. This explains why Lady does not speak; she has no memories and only acts instinctively because of the malice in her body. An epic battle with Killer, who is eventually defeated, unlocks Johnny's "Awaker" powers and Lady calls Killer's name for the first time. The ritual to bring about the opening of the Gate of Malice is underway and Johnny is determined to stop his sister. The team fights one last time against Gilbert, who is driven by Malice, before the final confrontation with Lady. Johnny delivers the final blow to Lady and she disappears along with Killer's body. Months later, Johnny receives a case from his detective agency and he begins to investigate. There are two different endings, the good ending and the bad ending. In the good ending, Shania follows Johnny out of the agency. In the Bad Ending, Shania wakes up from a building with red eyes; proof that she has been devoured by Malice. You get the good ending when you exhaust all of Shania's fetishes, including the ones for the optional merge.
