In the ninth installment of KOEI's "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" series, you take on the role of an aspiring ruler in ancient China and must try to unite the country under your rule. As in previous titles, players develop and manage large armies as they move across the vast land, using both military force and diplomatic skill to gain territory and followers. The hardcore strategy framework is complemented by a variety of mission types, branching storylines, and a sophisticated nod to the actual history and culture of the setting. Features in this edition include the ability to manage both the political and military aspects of the empire simultaneously, allowing players to continue negotiating while their troops are engaged in battle. While this version of the game retains the restriction that player characters must belong to the "ruler" class, the development of officers has been reworked to allow for greater control in the development of followers.
