Ridge Racer Type 4

Ridge Racer Type 4

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 is the fourth game in the Ridge Racer series. There are 8 tracks (with reversed variants, for a total of 16 layouts) and 321 vehicles, all of which are fictional. This version was one of the first games on the PlayStation to use Gouraud shading on the polygons, giving the game a visual depth that was previously lacking. It was also the first Ridge Racer game on the Sony system to feature a two-player split-screen mode and included two different driving models.

Story

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 is an arcade-style racing game that focuses on powersliding around corners. Depending on the brand of car you choose, the vehicles use one of two types of powersliding: drift and grip. Drift cars require players to step on the brakes once during the turn to achieve a smooth powerslide, while Grip cars require players to alternate between braking and accelerating to achieve the powerslide. The cars are earned by playing through the Grand Prix mode. Players choose one of four teams: R.C. Micro Mouse Mappy, Pac Racing Club, Racing Team Solvalou and Dig Racing Team, each with different difficulty levels, and one of four manufacturers: Age Solo, Lizard, Assoluto and Terrazi, which determine the type of vehicle and powerslide the player will use. In each race, the player must try to achieve a qualifying position, with higher rankings required to qualify in later stages. Depending on the qualifying position in each race, players will receive a new vehicle or an upgrade to their current vehicle, depending on the team and manufacturer. Better vehicles are obtained by consistently achieving higher positions (i.e. the best vehicles are obtained by finishing first in each match, while the less impressive vehicles are obtained by only achieving the minimum qualifying positions). There are a total of 320 cars that you can earn by racing with any combination of team, manufacturer, and qualifying position. When players unlock all 320 cars, they unlock another car modeled after Pac-Man, for a total of 321 vehicles. The game also features Time Attack mode, where players can try to set the fastest time on each track, and VS. Battle, a split-screen mode for two players (the first in the home console series), as well as an undocumented PlayStation Link Cable mode in which four players can play simultaneously. Players can also create their own vehicle decorations and participate in Extra Trials against high-performance prototype vehicles. The game is also compatible with the JogCon peripheral and PocketStation, which allow players to trade cars with friends. Another new feature is the Decal Edit, which lets players design their own logo for the cars.
