Prototype

Prototype

Prototype is the first of two games in which you'll take control of Alex Mercer, who fights against the BLACKLIGHT virus outbreak throughout Manhattan. Alex is himself infected with the virus, which gives him special mutant abilities that evolve over time and help him stop the virus.

Story

The game follows Alexander J. Mercer (voiced by Barry Pepper), who wakes up in a morgue in the basement of Gentek, a genetic engineering company in Manhattan, and runs down a pair of scientists who were about to perform an autopsy. Alex escapes and witnesses the scientists being gunned down by military personnel. Alex is discovered and attacked. He survives the bullets being fired into his chest and jumps over a wall to safety. He soon discovers that he now has powerful shapeshifting abilities, superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, senses, stamina, weapons, and the ability to "consume" people to take over their memories, abilities, and appearance. Unable to remember his past life, Alex decides to find and consume everyone involved in the conspiracy to find out the truth. During his search, Alex encounters two factions: the United States Marine Corps and Blackwatch, a special unit at Fort Detrick dedicated to fighting biological warfare, and the Infected, monsters created by a virus called BLACKLIGHT that is overrunning Manhattan. Captain Robert Cross (voiced by Jeffrey Pierce), a Blackwatch officer, is given the mission to find Alex and keep him in check. Alex contacts his sister Dana (voiced by Lake Bell), who helps him track down targets, leading to the infiltration of Gentek headquarters. He finds a young woman named Elizabeth Greene trapped in the building. Greene is a host for BLACKLIGHT and unleashes it on Manhattan after her escape. Dana refers Alex to Karen Parker, his ex-girlfriend. She agrees to help him stop the virus, but demands that Alex bring samples of the virus. Karen later leads Alex into a trap where he is confronted by Cross. During their fight, Alex almost defeated Cross when he mentioned "Penn Station," triggering a flashback that left Alex dazed. Alex is injected with a parasite that threatens to kill him. Alex seeks help from Dr. Ragland, a pathologist with ties to Gentek. Ragland helps Alex remove the parasite and turn it into a weapon against Greene. However, this has no effect on Greene, as her body immediately rejects the parasite and the rejected biomass forms a monstrous creature, the Supreme Hunter, which Alex kills. The origins of the virus and Elizabeth Greene are revealed through a contact: in 1969, the government tested the predecessor of the virus in Hope, Idaho, which targeted specific races. The virus mutated into something much more deadly and the entire population was infected. Elizabeth Greene was the only survivor; a biological anomaly in her body picked up the virus and rewrote her genetic code and that of her unborn son with the code name PARIAH. The remaining population of Hope, Idaho, was wiped out by Blackwatch. Greene and PARIAH were held in captivity for further research. Alex discovers his own past: Blackwatch shut down the Gentek project because of leaks and ordered the elimination of all project personnel. Alex Mercer took a sample of BLACKLIGHT as "insurance." Eventually, he is arrested by Blackwatch at Penn Station. In a final act of desperation and revenge, Alex Mercer smashes the vial containing BLACKLIGHT and releases the virus before being shot. The virus entered Mercer's bloodstream through the bullet holes and repaired his body on a cellular level. The contact and Alex pump a new biological agent "BLOODTOX" underground to drive the virus to the surface where it can be fought directly, whereupon Greene emerges in a giant behemoth. After Greene is defeated, she falls from the monster in human form and is devoured by Alex. Through her memories, she learns that General Randall, the head of Blackwatch, wants to destroy Manhattan with a nuclear weapon. The contact, who turns out to be Cross. Alex, with the help of the captain, infiltrates the USS Ronald Reagan to stop Randall. After Alex consumes Randall, Cross turns out to be the Supreme Hunter, who assumed Cross' identity after consuming him. He attacks Alex, claiming that they will stop looking for infected when Blackwatch leaves NYZ, and that after he consumes Alex, he will be strong enough to survive the nuclear detonation. Alex defeats the Supreme Hunter and takes the weapon by helicopter to the Atlantic Ocean, where it detonates, sweeping him away in the explosion. His remains drift back to the city and regenerate after eating a crow. During the credits, it is revealed that the public believes the military is the one who stopped the infection. A U.S. Senator tells the media that what happened in Manhattan is a case of nuclear and biological terrorism, and promises retribution to those responsible. Alex, reflecting on the events and the truth he has found out about himself, claims he has become "less than human, but also a little more." After the credits, we see Manhattan slowly recovering, the virus almost completely eradicated. Alex, who is on the
