On behalf of the UN, an American geological expedition investigates the mineral resources in a remote part of Siberia, deep in the pathless steppes of eastern Russia. But instead of oil, they discover a deposit of a previously unknown mineral. American scientists working for the Department of Defense discover that this mineral is actually identical to the substance used to power an alien artifact in their possession. This object is called EON (Extraterrestrial Object Nexus). It was found in 1919 by Colonel Emerson near the site of the Tunguska explosion. Emerson was the commander of a US military unit responsible for transporting US war supplies from the city of Vladivostok to the Eastern Front during the First World War. Experiments by the Department of Defense have shown that the items in the capsule were transported hundreds of thousands of years into the past. American scientists were unable to understand the capsule's construction or synthesize its fuel. Eventually, the classified machine was placed in storage to await further advances in human science.
Story
The story of the game revolves around an alien mineral, siberite, which can catalyze cold fusion and serves as fuel for an alien artifact. Siberite and the artifact - called EON - are discovered by a US expedition in Russia during the First World War. It turns out that EON is a time machine that can send objects back in time, but by the time of the discovery, siberite supplies are depleted and research is halted. Then, in the new millennium, huge deposits of the mineral are found in Siberia and the Americans are able to mine enough of it to make small-scale time travel. The U.S. makes a plan to send a small force two million years into the past. There it will mine the siberite and transport it across the Bering Land Bridge to Alaska, where it will one day be in American hands. The best troops will be selected, briefed and informed that this is a simple trip through time. The result is a new timeline in which the mineral is in Alaska and the U.S. is the only undisputed superpower thanks to its inexhaustible energy source. Here the time machine was found not by the USA, but by the Russians. The USSR suffers from the American domination. Frustration turns to outrage when Soviet scientists find traces of American settlement and alaskite, the source of American energy, in faraway Siberia. A Soviet expedition is sent through the EON, here called TAWAR, to repel the American thieves and obtain what is rightfully theirs.
