The game is based on the movie of the same name and follows the protagonist, Lieutenant Dale Hawkins, through five side-scrolling levels. The game was developed by Ocean Software, who are known for developing video games based on the respective movies. Navy SEALS is about Hawkins procuring Stinger missiles from Arab soldiers in the Middle East. The game received positive reviews upon its release, with critics praising the graphics, presentation, and challenging gameplay in particular. However, criticism was directed at the ZX Spectrum port, which was met with disapproval due to its monochrome graphics.

Story

The game is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up and revolves around the protagonist, Lieutenant Dale Hawkins, who must recover Stinger missiles hidden in Oman from Arab terrorists. The game consists of a total of five levels with different locations and starts with the player being assigned five lives. The main objective of the game is to find and place time bombs on crates containing Stinger missiles, where the player must escape before time runs out. The enemies in the game are Arab terrorists; the player must take them out by shooting them with his chosen weapon, which is a handgun by default. The other weapons available in the game include machine guns, rocket launchers and a flamethrower, which are only accessible by finding hidden crates. The second level of the game is located in Beirut and focuses on the player rescuing hostages along with a group of Navy Seals in a 3D representation of the city. If the player manages to rescue the hostages and recover all the missiles, the remaining troops will meet at a submarine. During the game, the player character can hold on to ledges, climb ladders, crawl and jump in any direction. The player can also push large crates to reach higher platforms. Combat focuses on shooting an enemy with a gun on sight, but the player can crawl at any time to dodge an enemy's oncoming bullets. The player can also take out enemies by dropping onto them while dangling from a higher platform. In each level, the game sets a time limit when a bomb is placed on one of the boxes of stinger missiles.
