This game includes elements from the Mega Man X series and the Mega Man Zero series. The game introduces a new open-ended game environment and the ability to choose the gender of the protagonist, a first in the series. The player's character, Vent or Aile, is located on a two-dimensional overlay map with sprites, where he or she fights enemies to complete the mission. When Vent and Aile get a biometal, they can change their form and gain different abilities, such as charging moves or charging their weapon with an element of that biometal; for example, Biometal H charges the weapon with electricity. If you are in a special form, using the form-specific abilities consumes the weapon energy. When Vent and Aile get the other half of the biometal, they can use a different special ability.

Story

The game is set in a technologically advanced world centuries after Mega Man Zero 4. Humans and Reploids now live peacefully side by side and are treated like humans because of the new laws. Over time, the inhabitants of Earth have managed to revive some of the former nations. However, to prevent further prosperity like in the old days, incidents occurred all over the world, where some of the machine life forms became Mavericks, making some areas dangerous for the inhabitants and soon hindering the exchange between nations. Soon this activity hindered exchanges between nations. Nations were divided into areas called the Inner, where it was safe for people to live, and the Outer region, where the dangerous Mavericks appeared. Thanks to the efforts of the Slither Inc. company, which has technologies excavated from historical ruins in the Outer regions, great progress has been made. Peaceful life is maintained by using Slither Inc. technology in the central areas of the cities. Damage from attacks by Mavericks (general term for Reploids and Mechaniloids that threaten the peace) is still occurring in the border areas, which have not yet been reached by the countries' crisis management. The people in these areas have formed a self-defense organization, the Guardians. They defend the border regions and investigate the cause of the Maverick element. Slither Inc. essentially uses technology developed from historical ruin finds as a lifeline for the cities, providing people with goods like energy resources. It's not necessarily a bad thing that the company has more or less seized the lifeline of cities, at least for the people in those cities. The president of Slither Inc. is named Serpent. Serpent is considered a wonderful person who has single-handedly built the company by digging out the old technology that lies dormant in the outside world. He has also created a mechaniloid army in his company and is said to have repeatedly saved countries from Maverick attacks in the past. The Guardians in the border regions, on the other hand, are considered unrelated private companies. They make the "Guardian Base," a giant flying ship, their headquarters and take in people on a volunteer basis not only to defend the borderlands but also to investigate the source of the Mavericks. The original leader of the Guardians disappeared while investigating an area in Outland, and command was taken over by a young girl named Prair.
