Story
A year has passed since Zero defeated Copy X. Since then, he has spent his time wandering the desert, defeating wave after wave of pantheons. At the beginning of the game, Zero makes his way through a sandstorm, tired and wrapped in a tattered cloak. As the sand subsides, he finds that he is once again being hunted by enemies. Despite his tattered armor and broken weapons (his staff and shield are useless), he throws his cloak to the wind and draws his Buster Shot rifle to defend himself. Elsewhere, the three surviving members of the Four Guardians (Phantom self-destructed trying to stop Zero's attack on Area X in the previous game) have taken command of Neo Arcadia, with Harpuia as leader. Copy X's death was covered up, as people revered him as their savior. Harpuia leaves Neo Arcadia and meets Zero after his battle in the desert. Harpuia takes him to the new Resistance base, where Zero is repaired and reunited with Ciel and the rest of the Resistance, and also meets their new commander Elpizo. Alone in her office, Ciel tells Zero about the changes that have taken place in the year he has been missing and reminds him of her great goal of creating a new energy system. She shows him a baby elf that is the basis for her current research.
