Story
Defiance picks up where Soul Reaver 2 ended. In Soul Reaver 2, Cain saved Raziel's life by snatching the Soul Reaver from him - Raziel was to enter the blade and become its soul-devouring spectral half. This causes a paradox that changes time for the worse and separates Cain and Raziel. Cain's part of the game is to seek out Moebius, the Time Streamer, a time-traveling mystic, to find out where Raziel is and how he changed time. During his search, Cain finds and completes a broken talisman from a vampire construct known as the Equilibrium Emblem. During his search, Cain discovers murals that tell of an ancient war between the first peoples of Nosgoth, the Original Vampires and the Hylden. After sealing the Hylden in an alternate dimension using the Pillars of Nosgoth, the Hylden cursed the Old Ones with bloodlust, sterility, and immortality, turning them into the first vampires. Cain learns from the murals that both races were prophesied to have a champion - a vampire champion wielding the Soul Reaver and a Hylden champion wielding a flaming sword. Because he possesses the Soul Reaver pictured, Cain believes he is the prophesied vampire champion. The outcome of the battle between the two champions remains unclear.
