James Bond 007: The Duel

James Bond 007: The Duel

The Duel is a James Bond video game that was released for the Sega Master System, the Sega Game Gear and the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. The game was developed and published by Domark and was released in 1993. Armed with a pistol, the player controls James Bond through various enemy bases to rescue female hostages and arm a bomb placed at a strategic point to destroy the base. Along the way, Bond must fight numerous villains and familiar bosses. The game is notable among Bond games for several reasons. Although it was released 4 years after Timothy Dalton's last appearance as James Bond, his likeness is used in the game, most notably in the opening screens, making it Dalton's last appearance in a Bond game. It was also the last Bond game published by Domark. It was also the first Bond game not directly based on a movie or novel. Instead, it featured an original storyline, albeit with familiar villains such as Jaws and Oddjob. Even if the game's plot wasn't its strong point, it was groundbreaking for future licensee EA, half of whose Bond games were based on original stories. An earlier Bond game, Operation Stealth, contained an original storyline, but the game was originally based on a generic Bond character named John Glames and was only licensed for the North American release.
