Hong Kong 97

Hong Kong 97

Hong Kong 97 is a 1995 multidirectional shooter video game developed in Japan for the Super Famicom in disc drive format by HappySoft Ltd, a homebrew game company. The game was developed by Japanese game journalist Kowloon Kurosawa (クーロン黒沢), who said the game was created in about a week. The game has gained cult status in Japan and Taiwan for its notoriously poor quality - it was classified as kusoge, which literally means "crappy game," a game considered "so bad it's good." Since then, it has been parodied several times. In the XLEAGUE.TV video game TV show Wez and Larry's Top Tens, the game was named the "Wacky Japanese Game of All Time" and was featured in an episode of Angry Video Game Nerd.

Story

The game is set around the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong in 1997, at which time people from mainland China (referred to as "fucking ugly reds", making this one of the few games on the Super Famicom to use swearing) immigrated to Hong Kong and generally increased the crime rate. As a countermeasure, Chin (Jackie Chan in his Wheels on Meals appearance), a relative of Bruce Lee, was hired by the Hong Kong government (represented by Chris Patten) to wipe out all 1.2 billion people in China. Meanwhile, research was underway in China to bring the dead "Tong Shau Ping" (Deng Xiaoping) back to life as the ultimate doomsday machine. When the game was launched in 1995, Deng Xiaoping, who was thought to be dead in the game, was still alive. However, he died months before the transfer of power, which is when the action of the game actually takes place.
