Heroes Chronicles: The Sword of Frost

Heroes Chronicles: The Sword of Frost

Heroes Chronicles: Sword of Frost is the eighth and final game in the Heroes Chronicles series. Tarnum must become a Dungeon Overlord of Nighon to prevent his former friend, the elven hero Gelu, from discovering the Sword of Frost. This campaign was one of two included in the single-disc set The Final Chapters.

Story

In The Sword of Frost, the direct sequel to Clash of the Dragons, Gelu, the bearer of Armageddon's Blade, sets out to destroy the Sword of Frost. Tarnum, who has heard of an ancient prophecy that the meeting of the two swords will bring about the end of the world, struggles to stop Gelu. In the recent chaos following the death of Queen Mutare of Nighon, Tarnum is able to take control of the dungeon creatures of Nighon, the only ones willing to fight Gelu, and becomes the Overlord. But dominating these brutal creatures brings out the darkness in Tarnum. The Sword of Frost is located in the northern lands of the Vori elves. Gelu is half Vori, so the elves are fighting Tarnum. In addition, Tarnum's own troops are prone to internal conflict. After being shot by a Medusa with a poisoned arrow, Tarnum appoints his rescuers, the Beholders, Neez, Zarm and Kilkik, as his bodyguards and advisors. They take revenge on the Medusa, but Zarm dies in the process. Kija, King Kilgor's third wife, also hunts Gelu for the Sword of Frost. She plans to steal it from him and give it to her husband so that her son will be named heir to Krewlod. Tarnum cannot convince either Kija or Gelu to give up their quest, so he decides to gain an advantage by adding the Azure Dragons to his army. Gelu knew that the Sword of Frost could only be destroyed by the Blade of Armageddon. However, he did not know that this could only be done under very difficult circumstances. Tarnum knew that if Gelu tried to destroy it with brute force, the cataclysm would occur. To learn more about the Sword of Frost, Tarnum captures Gelu's friend and captain, the dwarf Ufretin. In the process, he exchanges his remaining bodyguard, Kilkik, for the minotaur Trongar and the medusa Zallisa. Tarnum persuades Ufretin to understand him before allowing the dwarf to return to Gelu. Ufretin buys Tarnum enough time to capture Kija and destroy her army. But soon Gelu continues his march towards the city of Volee (where the sword is kept). When Tarnum finally defeats Gelu in Volee, he discovers that Kija, who had escaped from her dungeon a few weeks earlier, has already taken the Sword of Frost. In the final scene of the chronicle, Tarnum prays to the ancestors, "Please don't let my compassion destroy the world!" At the beginning of Heroes IV, it is revealed that shortly after the events in The Sword of Frost, Gelu fights Kilgor, who now wields the Sword of Frost. Kilgor was about to wage war on all of Antagarich, but he was stopped by Gelu and the Forest Guard. When the two blades clash in battle, they cause an explosion that destroys the world of Enroth. However, many of the planet's inhabitants escape through thousands of mysterious portals that lead to a new world, Axeoth. This event becomes known as the Reckoning, which results in Heroes of Might and Magic IV.
