Golden Axe

Golden Axe

To advance in the game, you'll fight your way through Death Adder's minions, including men armed with clubs and maces, skeleton warriors and knights. Players can attack with their weapon, jump and cast spells that hurt all the enemies on the screen. The strength of the spell depends on the number of "beams" that are currently available. The bars are replenished by collecting blue "potions", which are obtained by kicking small sprites, who then drop the potions. These sprites appear in the regular levels and in the bonus levels between levels. The male warrior Ax can cast earth spells. The dwarf Gilius casts lightning spells and the female warrior Tyris casts fire magic. Each character has a different number of maximum magic bars and different attack ranges. In the game there are different steeds called Bizarrians. These can be ridden if the enemy rider is taken out or if one of the horses is found sleeping. The weakest steed is the buttercup, with which you can knock down your enemies with a swipe of the tail. The more powerful dragon, which can either shoot fireballs or breathe fire, can be found later in the game.

Story

The game is set in the fictional land of Yuria, a medieval high-fantasy world in the style of Conan the Barbarian. An evil creature known as Death Adder has captured the king and his daughter and is holding them captive in their castle. He also finds the Golden Axe, the magical landmark of Yuria, and threatens to destroy both the axe and the royal family unless the people of Yuria accept him as ruler. Three warriors set out to save Yuria and avenge their losses at the hands of the Death Adder. The first is a battleaxe-wielding dwarf, Gilius Thunderhead, from the mines of Wolud, whose twin brother was killed by Death Adder's soldiers. Another is a barbarian, Ax Battler, who wields a two-handed broadsword and seeks revenge for the murder of his mother. The last is the longsword-wielding Tyris Flare, an Amazon whose parents were both killed by Death Adder. The warriors rescue the inhabitants of the sacked turtle village, which is on the shell of a giant turtle. The turtle takes the characters across the sea and they then fly to the castle on the back of a giant eagle. Once at the castle, they defeat Death Adder, who wields the Golden Axe, and save the land. In the Mega Drive and PC versions, as well as in other ports, the characters also fight Death Adder's mentor, Death Bringer, as the actual final boss. After the final battle, the warriors receive a magical golden axe that gives the player immortality.
