Final Fantasy VIII is the eighth main part of the Final Fantasy series. The gameplay deviates from many of the series' standards. It still uses the Active Time Battle system, but departs from the series' traditional method of increasing a character's strength by leveling up, although levels are not completely eliminated, as they were in Final Fantasy II. Also, there is no magic point-based system for casting spells. Instead, magic is obtained by collecting, dragging and creating items, and is used to strengthen characters through the node point system.

Story

Final Fantasy VIII is set in a fantasy world with science fiction elements and revolves around Squall Leonhart, a young SeeD mercenary who is hired by Balamb Garden for various missions. Squall and his friends are recruited to help a group called "Forest Owls", led by Rinoa Heartilly, an endeavor that escalates into a conflict against the forces of the sorceress Edea.
