Fatal Frame

Fatal Frame

Fatal Frame is the first game in the Fatal Frame series, introducing the series' unique premise of fighting ghosts with a special camera. Fatal Frame was the first game to introduce the innovative use of an old-fashioned camera as the main weapon. Players not only navigate the main characters through the grounds of the mansion, but can also switch to viewfinder mode, in which the camera is flipped up and the view changes to the frame of the camera. In viewfinder mode, the player can take photos of ghosts, both violent and harmless. There are also items, some of which can be consumed and most of which are key items needed to open doors, complete tasks or solve puzzles. Puzzles appear frequently in the game, some of them based on the same concept, but they become increasingly difficult. The game's different difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Hard, Nightmare or Deadly (Xbox only)) determine the number of consumable items scattered around the mansion and how scary the enemies are. The main horror aspect of the game is undoubtedly the ghosts. The mechanics programmed for the ghosts allow them to ethereally float through the air, walls and floors, and even teleport, giving them many ways to attack the player. The ghosts' appearances are usually inspired by their deaths or by Japanese creepy stigmas, which some claim are especially eerie. Depending on which console it is played on, the game offers two endings. After completing the game, a leaderboard is created based on total time, points accumulated and other categories. Depending on the difficulty level, the size of the ghost list and other criteria, the player receives rewards and unlocks, such as alternative costumes and camera features. Beating the game also unlocks the battle mode, where the player must fight certain ghosts and is rewarded with points for purchasing unlockables. There is also the option to replay the game with all the equipment, upgrades and unlockables.

Story

Set in 1986, the story begins with aspiring folklorist Mafuyu Hinasaki, who one night decides to investigate the Himuro House, a place that is supposedly haunted, to find the famous folklorist Junsei Takamine. He brings a special gift, a special camera that has the ability to "reveal things that normal eyes cannot see." Mafuyu enters the mansion and meets the only inhabitants, the ghosts of the people who were killed there. After fending off a violent spirit and seeing the power of the camera with his own eyes, Mafuyu decides to continue his quest. On his way, however, a dark presence surrounds him, and Mafuyu's fate is uncertain. Two weeks later, Mafuyu's sister Miku shows up in front of the mansion. Fearing that the worst has happened to her brother, she takes it upon herself to enter the house and find him. Inside, she finds the camera Mafuyu brought with him and, as he investigates further, finds out the truth about the missing folklorist. Takamine came to the mansion to document the gruesome events that occurred there long ago. During his investigation, he comes across the mysterious strangulation ritual that took place in the mansion. But before he and his assistants could leave the haunted compound, they were attacked by the ghosts, who were killed after the failed ritual. Miku penetrates deeper and deeper into the mansion, determined to find the truth and her missing brother. The story gets worse and worse with each room Miku enters, as she later finds out that the shrine girl (who is dead) is also looking for Mafuyu.
