Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

Crimson Butterfly is the second part of the Fatal Frame series, although it is not a direct sequel to the first title Fatal Frame. The story follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu as they explore an abandoned village and have encounters with the paranormal. Players must use the camera obscura to defeat ghosts and uncover the village's secrets. An Xbox port subtitled Director's Cut was released in 2004 and included additional features. A remake of the game, titled Project Zero 2: Wii Edition, was released in 2012 in Europe and Japan for the Wii.

Story

Fatal Frame II is set in the fictional region of Minakami, Japan. While in the game's present, the construction of a dam is planned in a forest at this location, the village of Minakami (literally, "village of all gods"), a "[l]eet" settlement where most of the game takes place, is also located there. The player learns that the village of Minakami was the scene of the "Crimson Sacrifice Ritual", the failure of which caused the settlement to disappear, earning it the name "The Lost Village". In the game's present there is an urban legend about the lost village, according to which people who get lost in the Minakami forest are trapped in the village forever. The protagonists of Fatal Frame II are Mio and Mayu Amakura, twin sisters who visit their favorite childhood playground in Minakami before it is lost due to the construction of the dam. The main antagonist is the vengeful spirit of Sae Kurosawa, the only twin shrine girl sacrificed for the failed ritual. She longs to see her twin sister Yae again, whom she mistook for Mio, and uses Mayu to try to complete the ritual with her. Other characters include the ghost of Itsuki Tachibana, a young man who also mistakes Mio for Yae but helps her and Mayu escape instead, and Seijiro Makabe, a folklorist who visited the village of Minakami with a camera obscura prototype (the same camera Mio uses in the game) and his assistant Ryozo Munakata.[20] Makabe later became a temporary victim for the Abyss known as Kusab. Although Mio and Mayu's story takes place after Miku Hinasaki's, the events in Minakami village precede those in Himuro's mansion in the original game.
