Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

Dragon Quest III is a clear expansion of the original Dragon Warrior and Dragon Warrior II. The game uses the basic conventions of console role-playing games, such as leveling up by collecting experience points and equipping items. Combat is turn-based, as in the other games in the series. Dragon Warrior III has a class system, in which each character has a specific class. While the hero always keeps the hero class, the other characters can choose between the following classes: Soldier (Warrior in the GBC version), Fighter, Pilgrim (Cleric), Wizard (Mage), Merchant (Dealer), Jester (Jester), Sage and Thief, which was only available in the later versions. The choice of class has a great impact on the character's stats and the spells he or she can learn. Also, when a character reaches experience level 20, he or she has the option to change classes in the Temple of Dhama, located halfway through the game. The game begins with only the hero in the party, who can then recruit a party of three at the local tavern. Unlike most Dragon Quest groups, the party does not consist of characters other than the hero that play a role in the story. Although only four characters can be in the party at a time, additional party members can stay in the tavern to make room for new recruits. Another new feature is an arena where the player can place bets on the outcome of monster fights. In the remakes, some interface changes were carried over from later games in the series, such as the simplified opening of doors, the bag that replaces storing items in the bank, the "Tidy Item" and "Tidy Bag" item sorting commands, and the "Full HP" command that lets you automatically cast healing and status restoration spells outside of combat. While the earlier Dragon Quest games were also non-linear, Dragon Quest III was the most extensive example of open-world gameplay among the early Dragon Quest games. Another "major innovation was the introduction of day/night cycles; certain items, characters, and quests are only accessible at certain times of day."

Story

Dragon Quest III takes place many years before the original Dragon Quest, in a world that bears great resemblance to the real one. An evil fiend, Baramos, threatens to destroy the world. The hero, son or daughter (you can choose whether you are male or female) of the legendary Ortega, recruits up to three traveling companions and sets out to defeat Baramos, only to find out later that Baramos is just a disciple of Zoma, the fiend who rules the dark world below. The hero then travels to the Dark World, called Alefgard in the following parts of the series, and restores the light. For his bravery, the hero receives the title Loto (Erdrick in the NES version). The flow of the game is as follows. The hero travels from his homeland of Aliahan to explore the world and obtain three keys needed to open doors in the game. After saving a couple in the city of Baharata from the villain Robbin' 'ood, the hero receives Black Pepper, which he trades for a sailing ship in Portoga. With the ship, the hero acquires the last key and the six mystical orbs with which he can revive the legendary bird Lamia. Lamia takes the hero to the castle of Baramos. After a fierce battle, the hero's celebration is interrupted when Zoma attacks and opens the chasm to the dark world. In the dark world, the hero obtains the Stones of Sunlight, the Staff of Rain, and the Seal of Rubiss. These items are then exchanged for the Rainbow Drop. This item is used to build a bridge that leads the hero to Zoma's castle, where the final confrontation takes place.
