DoDonPachi DaiOuJou
The fourth game in the Donpachi series.
Story
Centuries have passed since the catastrophic war that almost wiped out humanity. The culprit was the deranged commander of the DonPachi Corps, a military force of starfighter pilots known for their combat prowess and emotional detachment (a result of the inhumane training they undergo - the first game is a prime example of this, with the trainee actually slaughtering comrades posing as enemies); The remains of his genocidal army were collected, transported to the moon and sealed in a network of caves, where they rotted away while the nightmares became legend. The humans flourished again and even colonized the moon itself. The megacity of Lunapolis was the center of human activity on the moon. But in time, the dormant machines reawakened, rebuilt and evolved: the planet's underground caverns were teeming with advanced war machines and automated production facilities, at the center of which was a heavily guarded platform on which the ultimate fighting machine of the past, the mechanical bee Hibachi (this time 緋蜂, literally "scarlet bee"), was slowly being rebuilt. Still following their original programming, the machines broke through the seal, invaded the surface and quickly took control of the almost defenceless Lunapolis, whose streets and facilities were now completely overrun and littered with heavy artillery emplacements. The DonPachi Corps was reactivated and only had enough time to build two fighters. Each of these fighters was assigned an Element Doll, a highly advanced, sentient droid (apparently common in human society and little more than a slave) that could provide tactical data and enhance the craft's capabilities. Knowing that the mission is suicidal, the two assault ships are deployed on the lunar surface outside of Lunapolis, alone against a ruthless army of machines that have only one goal: to kill.
