Story

Nero, a young demon hunter who lives on the remote island of Fortuna, is also a member of the Order of the Sword: a religious sect of knights who worship the legendary dark knight Sparda as a god. Dante arrives and murders the leader of the Order, the high priest Sanctus, in front of the entire community. At the same time, an army of demons invades the city and puts everyone in danger, including Nero's lover Kyrie. Nero is commissioned by Kyrie's brother Credo, the captain of the Holy Knights, to stop Dante. On his journey he finds out that he himself is a descendant of Sparda and Dante is not his enemy. On behalf of Sanctus, Agnus has tapped the power of the long-lost Devil's Arm Yamato, the sword of Dante's brother Virgil, to create a demonic army and endow high-ranking members of the order with demonic power. To Agnus' horror, the broken Yamato restores itself in Nero's presence and flies to Nero's aid. When the Order's plans are revealed, Agnus flees to inform the resurrected Sanctus. As Nero sets his sights on the Order, he discovers to his horror that Credo is part of the conspiracy, until he is finally deceived as well when they witness Kyrie being kidnapped by the resurrected Sanctus. He wants to defeat the demon army he created with a creature called Savior to strengthen the people's worship of Sparda. Since he already has the Sparda sword in his possession and needs the blood of a Sparda descendant in addition to the Yamato, Sanctus captures Nero to strengthen the core of Savior. Dante arrives with Trish, who has turned out to be a spy for the Order, and makes the dying Credo promise to save Nero and Kyrie. Trish evacuates Fortuna's human inhabitants while Dante destroys all the Gates of Hell scattered across Fortuna, defeats Agnus, and reclaims the Yamato sword for the last time. In an aerial battle over Fortuna, Dante faces off against the Savior and thrusts the Yamato through the Savior's chest, where Nero catches it to free himself and Kyrie and defeat Sanctus. Nero is able to make his peace with the power he was given to protect those he cares about. Before Dante leaves, he decides to entrust the Yamato to Nero, and Kyrie and Nero kiss for the first time in the ruins of Fortuna. Back in Dante's office, Lady arrives. As revealed earlier in the game, it was Lady who sent Dante and Trish to Fortuna because the Order had interfered with some of their missions, which is why Trish immediately went undercover to reveal the true face of the Order.
