Sketch Turner, a "starving artist" and freelance rock musician, is working on his latest comic, called "Comix Zone." Comix Zone tells the story of the New World Empire trying to defend Earth from an invasion of renegade aliens, drawing inspiration from Sketch's (strangely vivid) dreams and nightmares. One night, while Sketch is working on Comix Zone during a thunderstorm, lightning strikes a panel of his comic. At that moment, Comix Zone's main villain - a powerful mutant named Mortus - manages to escape the pages of the comic and kill Sketch so he can become flesh and blood and take over the real world. Having no power in the real world, Mortus sends Sketch into the world of his own comic, where he attracts unopposed enemies who try to kill him. Inside the comic, Sketch meets General Alissa Cyan, who believes him to be a superhero ("the Chosen One") who has come to save her post-apocalyptic world from the evil of Mortus and the alien invaders. Alissa ignores Sketch's protests and sends him on his mission, keeping him informed by radio with instructions and clues. It's up to Sketch to stop Mortus' evil plans and find a way out of this comic book world before his own creations wipe him out for good. The game has two possible endings. At the end of the game, Alissa is trying to disarm a nuclear bomb when Mortus comes into the comic and throws it into the chamber, which starts to fill with liquid. Mortus then fights Sketch. If the player defeats Mortus and the Kreeps he summons quickly enough to drain the liquid and save Alissa, an ending occurs where Alissa enters the real world with Sketch. Comix Zone is a huge success and sells out on the first day. Alissa joins the army and eventually becomes the head of security for the United States. Roadkill gets a huge amount of mozzarella cheese and spends a lot of time exploring the city's new sewage system when he's not sleeping under a pile of Sketch's dirty socks. When the player defeats Mortus after the chamber fills with liquid, Alissa dies. Sketch comes out, but his comic is destroyed. The last sentence in the cutscene reads, "Will Sketch recreate his adventure for a happier ending?"
