Story

The year is 1986, and the United States and the Soviet Union are taking the first tentative steps toward perestroika - a sense of friendship and cooperation that has not existed between the two superpowers for decades. It seems that the Cold War may indeed be over. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees that glasnost is a good thing. A fundamentalist faction within the Soviet government doesn't want the Cold War to thaw - it wants to heat it up. Led by Barinsky, the radical head of the KGB, a group of separatists makes a last, desperate attempt to bring the USSR back under the control of the communist regime by framing an American for an assassination attempt on the Soviet president, setting off a chain of events that could well lead to World War III. Matthew Carter, a tough American journalist following a tip from an informant, has just arrived in Moscow to write a story. He hopes this assignment will lead to the story of a lifetime. Instead, he finds himself caught in the middle of Barinsky's conspiracy. Instead of fighting for the Pulitzer Prize, Carter is now fighting to clear his name, get to the bottom of Barinsky's sinister plans, and - hopefully - get out of the Soviet Union alive.
