City of Heroes

City of Heroes was a superhero-based MMORPG that ran from April 2004 to November 2012. In April 2019, the source code to run a City of Heroes server was widely distributed. This made it possible to create City of Heroes servers outside of NCSoft's direct sphere of influence and revived interest in the game, which had been out of development for more than six years at the time. As of January 2024, NCSoft has taken no steps to shut down the servers based on this source code. On January 4, 2024, NCSoft granted an official license to host the game to Homecoming Servers LLC, which operates the rogue server Homecoming: City of Heroes.
