Castlevania: Circle of the Moon

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon is the first game in the series based on the action/RPG structure of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, rather than the level-based action style of all previous Castlevania games. Dracula's castle is a single continuous building, and as Nathan discovers artifacts within it, he gains new abilities that allow him to explore more of it. While Nathan can only use his killer whip as a weapon, he can find and equip different types of armor and accessories that change his stats. Unique to this part of the series is the dual equipment system, where a combination of two cards gives Nathan unique magical abilities. For example, if you combine a Fire card with a Whip card, the Killer Whip will get the Fire trait, and if you combine it with a Summon card, Nathan will be able to summon a Fire Demon that will attack the enemies on the screen.

Story

Circle of the Moon is set in 1830, in one of the fictional universes of the Castlevania series. The premise of the original series is the eternal conflict between the vampire hunters of the Belmont clan and the immortal vampire Dracula. However, the protagonist of Circle of the Moon is Nathan Graves, whose parents died a decade ago to banish Dracula. Morris Baldwin, who helped with Dracula's banishment, trained him to defeat Dracula and the monsters; Morris eventually chose him as his successor and gave him the "hunter's whip," much to the displeasure of Hugh, Morris' son, who trained alongside him. In an old castle, Camilla, a minion of Dracula, brings him back to life, but is interrupted by the arrival of Morris, Nathan and Hugh. Before they can banish him again, Dracula destroys the ground beneath Nathan and Hugh, sending them plummeting down a long tunnel. Hugh survives the fall, leaving Nathan behind because he wants to find his father. Nathan sets out to search the castle for his mentor. Along the way, he learns that Morris' soul will be used at the next full moon to help Dracula regain full strength. He also regularly encounters Hugh, who becomes increasingly hostile as the game progresses. Eventually, Nathan meets Camilla, who hints that she and Dracula are responsible for the changes in his personality. Nathan defeats Camilla in her true form and encounters Hugh again. Upon seeing him, Hugh immediately attacks him to prove himself to his father by Nathan's defeat; however, Nathan realizes that Dracula is controlling Hugh. Nathan defeats him, and Dracula's control over Hugh breaks. Hugh confesses that he doubted his self-worth when Nathan was chosen to succeed him, and tasks him with rescuing Morris. Once in the ceremony room, Nathan confronts Dracula, who confirms that he tampered with Hugh's soul to cause his personality change. They begin to fight and halfway through, Dracula teleports away to gain his full power. Hugh then frees his father and instructs Nathan to banish Dracula. Nathan continues the fight and defeats Dracula. He escapes from the collapsing castle and reunites with Morris and Hugh. Nathan is declared a master vampire hunter by Morris. Hugh vows to train under Morris again because of his failure.
