Cannon Fodder

Cannon Fodder

Cannon Fodder is an action-strategy shoot 'em up game developed by Sensible Software and published by Virgin Interactive. The game has a military theme and is based on shooting, but with a strategy game-like control system. The player controls his/her troops through numerous missions, fighting enemy infantry, vehicles and installations. Cannon Fodder has a darkly humorous tone that has been both praised and condemned by commentators. The developers intended the game to convey an anti-war message, which some reviewers acknowledged, but the Daily Star and a number of public figures scoffed at the game. In other respects, critics praised the game, which often achieved scores of over 90% in Amiga magazines. Amiga Action gave it an unprecedented score, calling it the best game of the year.

Story

Cannon Fodder is a military action game with strategy and shoot 'em up elements. The player controls a small squad of up to five soldiers. These soldiers are armed with machine guns that kill the enemy infantry with a single shot. The player's troops are similarly fragile. While they have superior firepower at the beginning of the game, the enemy infantry gets stronger as the game progresses. The enemies include not only foot soldiers, but also vehicles such as jeeps, tanks and helicopters, as well as missile-armed turrets. The player must also destroy buildings that house enemy soldiers. For these targets, which are invulnerable to machine gun fire, the player must use secondary, explosive weapons: Grenades and rockets. Ammunition for these weapons is limited and the player must find supply crates to replenish his troops. Wasting these weapons may result in the player not having enough to complete mission objectives. The player can choose to shoot at crates, destroying enemy troops and buildings. This is less risky for his soldiers than going for the crates, but also carries a greater risk of running out of ammo. The player goes through 23 missions, each of which is divided into several levels, for a total of 72 levels. There are different locations such as jungle, snow and desert, some with unique terrain features and vehicles such as igloos and snowmobiles. The player also has to deal with rivers (which the soldiers are slowed down and can't shoot when crossing) and quicksand, as well as mines and other booby traps. In addition to shooting, the game also contains strategic elements and uses a point-and-click control system more typical of strategy games than action games.[9] Since the player's troops are heavily outnumbered and can be easily killed, he must proceed cautiously and plan and position carefully. To this end, he can divide the troops into smaller units to take separate positions or risk fewer soldiers when advancing into dangerous areas.
