Cadash

Cadash

Cadash is an early example of a trend that took hold in Japanese arcade games in the early 1990s: the "platform RPG". Cadash borrows much of its gameplay from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, combining side-scrolling platform action with an RPG system of stats, levels, money and magic. In the arcade version, four characters can play simultaneously, and in the console versions, up to two players can choose from four different characters: Fighter, Mage, Priestess and Ninja, each with different attacks, stats and abilities. Players then progress through each level, killing monsters and bosses, collecting keys to open doors, and earning gold and experience. Gold is also obtained from slain enemies and treasure chests. Villages sell items, weapons, armor, and (in the console versions) extra lives, with each village you appear in offering better equipment. Some villagers and benevolent creatures also provide information. The arcade version has a limited playtime, which can be extended by buying increasingly expensive hourglasses in stores or by collecting rare bonuses. In the stores and hidden places there are healing herbs that restore 10 HP when brought to zero, and antidotes that cure poison inflicted by certain enemies. There are also two elixirs in the game that act like healing herbs, except that they restore all HP. The game consists of five stages. Stages one, two and four consist of two worlds, above and below ground. Stage three consists of three worlds. Stage five takes place entirely in Cadash Castle. The environments vary greatly, from pleasant meadows to caves and from forests to underwater worlds. Some enemies you'll encounter in these levels come from common mythology, while others are completely invented for the game.

Story

The game is set in a medieval fantasy world similar to the High Fantasy in The Lord of the Rings. The demons and abominations of nature that dwell in the underground kingdom of Cadash have not forgotten that thousands of years ago they shared the light with humans. Then one rose among them who was especially powerful, a demonic sorcerer born of a human woman - the Balrog (Baarogue or Baalogue in the arcade version, and Barlog in the TurboGrafx version). The Balrog promised his followers that after some time they could emerge from their underground prison and rule the world of humans, taking revenge on humans for their earlier defeat in battle and subsequent banishment, if the Balrog could mix his blood with that of a human king. The Balrog and his demonic armies have gathered over the centuries and are now powerful enough to come to the surface and wage war against the unprepared human kingdoms, who had not experienced war for millennia and were quickly succumbing to the Balrog. The human world is almost completely reduced to rubble by the Balrog. But that was not enough for the Balrog, for his prey is the most powerful of all human kingdoms, the kingdom of Dirzir. One night, the beautiful Princess Salassa is kidnapped by the Balrog from the keep of Deerzar, the capital of Dirzir, and taken to the dreaded castle of Cadash. There the Balrog plans the ritual by which he will magically bind himself to the human princess to become all-powerful and invincible. Dilsarl, the desperate and helpless old king of Dirzir, has vowed to give his entire kingdom to the one who saves his beloved only daughter, and many brave heroes have disappeared into the depths of Cadash on this quest.
