Battle Wings

Battle Wings

"Battle Wings," known in Japan as either "B-Wing" (ビー・ウィング) or "B-Wings" (ビー・ウィングズ), is a vertical-scrolling shooter first released by Data East as an arcade game in 1984. The game was ported to the Family Computer by Data East in 1986 and was Data East's very first home version for that platform. The game consists of 45 levels (30 in the Family Computer version) and contains no backstory or plot. The player controls a ship called the FX-1 and collects power-up parts (called “Wings”) to progress through the levels and ultimately defeat the armored mobile fortress Gobunasu in the final level. The game features two distinct top-down levels where the player can press the second button to descend to the ground when they do not currently have a power-up. At ground level, the player is not affected by aerial attacks, but the ship is automatically returned to the air after a certain amount of time. At ground level, the player can still be hit by attacks from ground-based units and may also lose their ship if they collide with obstacles. The 8-way joystick controls the player’s movements; one button is used for shooting and the other for descending to the ground (or retracting the wings). The background image scrolls endlessly as the player moves horizontally. When you complete the game’s final level, your score jumps to 9,999,999 points, which you can enter as your high score. You can also easily rack up points by equipping and unequipping your power-up. If you press the button twice while the unequipping animation is playing, you’ll receive 2,000 points. The player receives an extra life every 40,000 points, making it possible to collect an almost infinite number of lives. If the player reaches over 10,000,000 points this way before completing the final level, it takes over 20 minutes for the counter to reach 99,999,999 points.
