Altered Beast
“Altered Beast” is a beat-’em-up video game from 1988, developed by Team Shinobi and published by Sega for arcades. The game is set in ancient Greece and follows a Roman centurion who is brought back to life by the Olympian god Zeus to save his daughter Athena from Neff, the demonic ruler of the underworld. By collecting three power-ups in a level, the player character can transform into one of five mythical beasts. In the original arcade version, the end credits are interspersed with footage of actors in costumes representing the game’s various characters and monsters, suggesting that the entire game was a film production.
Story
A Roman centurion who had fallen in battle is raised from the dead by Zeus. The centurion receives a mission from Zeus to save his daughter Athena from a demon god named Neff in the underworld. To withstand the dangers, the warrior gets the ability to absorb spirit orbs that transform him into an altered beast, a half-animal, half-human creature of immense power. Between each level there are small animations that give the player glimpses of Athena's dangers. First, he travels through the graveyard, fighting his way past zombies and winged demons. The centurion transforms into a werewolf to fight Neff in the form of Aggar. The centurion defeats him, but Neff escapes. The centurion travels through the underworld, where he fights giant leeches, Chinese rattlesnakes with dragon heads, and fierce chicken stingers (which resemble those from Golden Axe). The centurion transforms into a humanoid thunder dragon to fight Neff in the form of Octeyes. The centurion defeats him, but Neff escapes. The Centurion travels through the Cave of Souls, where he fights cave needles (which resemble giant ants), turtle-snail hybrids, and zombies called Grave Masters. The centurion transforms into a humanoid bear to fight Neff in the form of Mouldy Snail. The centurion defeats him, but Neff escapes. The Centurion arrives at Neff's palace, where he fights his way through zombies, chicken stabbers and hammer demons. The centurion transforms into a humanoid tiger to fight Neff in the form of the crocodile worm. The centurion defeats him, but Neff escapes. After the centurion arrives in Dis, he fights his way through winged demons, goat men, boar men, sawfish and purple unicorn men to get to Neff. When the centurion confronts Neff, the centurion turns into a golden werewolf while Neff turns into a rhino man. After he is defeated, a blue bird comes out of the ground and transforms back into Athena. She is then shown hugging her lycanthrope hero and thanking him for saving her. In the original game, the credits are punctuated with images of actors in costumes for the various characters and monsters in the game, suggesting that the entire game was a movie production.[2]
