Aliens versus Predator

Aliens versus Predator

Aliens versus Predator offers three different campaigns, each playable as a different species: Alien, Predator or human Colonial Marine. Each player character has different objectives, abilities and weapons. In the single-player campaign, the player has to go through a series of conventional levels that are adapted to each character's abilities. As a Colonial Marine, the player uses a range of weapons to fight aliens and Predators. The Marine wears armor for protection and uses an image intensifier and flares to improve visibility in dark areas. In the role of the Predator, the player uses a variety of weapons from the Predator movies such as wrist blades, a throwing disc and shoulder-mounted energy weapons. The Predator is the most durable of the three player characters and can survive falls from greater heights than humans. The player can use a cloaking device to become invisible and use several different vision modes to detect enemies, including an infrared vision mode and a mode that responds to electrical systems. As an alien, the player can freely explore most of the game's environments and even climb over walls and ceilings. However, the alien has no weapons, but uses its claws, tail and jaws to attack its enemies. The screen is distorted with a fisheye effect to reflect the alien's field of vision. The player can also use a kind of echo sounder in dark areas and detect pheromones to distinguish human or Predator enemies. The alien can drop from any height without hurting itself and is the fastest of the three player characters. Several bonus levels allow each player character to access parts of the other characters' missions. In order for the Marine and Predator characters to traverse the areas of the Alien missions, the player is equipped with a jetpack for the Marine and a grappling hook for the Predator.

Story

The storylines of the three player characters are independent of each other. As an alien, the player must defend the alien hive from the human marines and then stowaway into an evacuating spaceship to reach the marines' ship, the Ferarco. When the Ferarco's self-destruct system activates, the player must reach the escape shuttle that will take them to Gateway Station. Here, the player explores the station and fights against more Marines until he reaches a ship that leaves for Earth. Before boarding the ship, the player fights two Predators before the alien boards the shuttle to Earth. In the role of the colonial marine, the player starts in a research station on LV-426, built to investigate the abandoned spaceship where the crew of the Nostromo first encountered the alien eggs in the movie Alien (1979). Aliens attack and the player must fight his way through the research station, the abandoned ship and an adjacent colony. Next, the player explores the atmosphere processing station and closes its cooling valves to trigger an explosion that wipes out the aliens. The player character escapes in a spaceship and travels to Odobenus Station in orbit above the planetoid, where he fights more aliens, Predators, Facehuggers and cybernetically enhanced aliens until he reaches the spaceship Tyrargo. Aboard the ship, the player fights more enemies, including an Alien/Predator hybrid and "Praetorian" aliens. Then the player fights an alien queen and defeats her by expelling her through the airlock. The Predator character's story visits three different planets and begins with the player chasing marines to recover a captured Predator ship and its occupants from a human military base. At the base, aliens are accidentally released and the player discovers that the humans have created an alien/Predator hybrid by implanting an alien embryo into the captured Predator. The player defeats the hybrid, triggers the facility's self-destruct mechanism, and escapes with the Predator ship. Next, the player visits Fiorina "Fury" 161, the prison planet that is the setting of Alien 3 (1992), where more battles between aliens and marines occur. Finally, the player visits an alien habitat controlled by Marines and fights cybernetically enhanced aliens, "Praetorian" aliens, and finally the Alien Queen.
