Akuji the Heartless

Akuji the Heartless

Akuji the Heartless is an action-adventure video game released for the PlayStation in 1998. It uses a modified Gex: Enter the Gecko engine, and both games were developed by Crystal Dynamics. The gameplay consists of hack-and-slash combat combined with platform elements.

Story

The game centers on Akuji (voiced by Richard Roundtree), a voodoo priest and warrior who had his heart ripped out on his wedding day and is cursed to walk in the underworld through the use of voodoo magic. However, Kaisha, his bride-to-be, finds him in hell and speaks to him in soul form: she informs him that it was Orad, Akuji's own brother, who orchestrated his murder. She asks Akuji to flee and stop him, because their families are preparing for war, and Orad wants to sacrifice them to the gods. After crossing the first level of the underworld and questioning the Loa Baron Samedi, Akuji learns that he has a chance at redemption: If he crosses Hell and gathers the souls of his ancestors, whom the Baron despises for their wickedness, he will grant Akuji safe passage out of the Underworld. On his way, he must also defeat the guardians of each spirit gate so that he can progress in his quest for the souls.
