Age of Mythology
Age of Mythology is a real-time strategy video game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was released on October 30, 2002 in North America and a week later in Europe. Age of Mythology is a spin-off of the Age of Empires series and was inspired in part by the mythology and legends of the Greeks, Egyptians and Norwegians, rather than actual historical events. Many gameplay elements are similar to the Age of Empires series. The campaign follows an Atlantean admiral, Arkantos, who is forced to travel through the lands of the game's three cultures to hunt down a cyclops that is in league with Poseidon against Atlantis. Age of Mythology was a commercial success, reaching platinum four months after its release, with over one million units sold. It was followed in 2003 by the expansion pack Age of Mythology: The Titans. On May 8, 2014, Age of Mythology: Extended Edition was released for Windows via Steam. This was followed by a second expansion pack, Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon, which was released on January 28, 2016.
Story
Like many other real-time strategy games, Age of Mythology is based on defeating enemy units and cities, building up your own units and cities, and training villagers and fighters. In this way, players can defeat and conquer rival cities and civilizations. Players advance their tribe through four "Ages": beginning in the Archaic Age, players can advance to the Classical Age, the Heroic Age, and finally to the Mythical Age. Each advancement to a higher age unlocks new units and technologies for the player that strengthen his/her settlement. However, for advancement, resources must be paid and a certain building must be constructed. There are three playable cultures in Age of Mythology: the Greeks, the Egyptians and the Northmen. Each culture has three "main gods" - important deities such as Ra, Zeus or Odin. The player chooses his main god before the game begins. Each time a player advances to the next age, a "minor god" is chosen. The minor gods are somewhat less important historically than their major gods. The minor gods include Bast and Aphrodite. All gods grant the player unique technologies, mythical units, and a unique "god power" - a one-time special ability that can either harm an opponent or benefit the player who uses it.
