Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is the second major installment in The Legend of Zelda series and the direct sequel to the first game. Like its predecessor, it includes dungeons that must be found in the overworld and searched for a useful item. However, compared to its predecessor, the game has many important changes in gameplay, which mainly affect movement and combat. When you move around the world map, you'll encounter enemies that act on a side-scrolling playing field, and not in the top-down perspective that the series is known for.

Story

A few years after the events of The Legend of Zelda, just before his sixteenth birthday, Link notices a strange mark on the back of his left hand that resembles the coat of arms of Hyrule. He seeks out Impa, who then takes Link to the tower of the North Castle, where a girl lies in a deep sleep. Impa tells Link that the girl is Zelda, a princess of Hyrule from long ago and the origin of the "Legend of Zelda." Long ago, the Prince of Hyrule had tried to get the Triforce, but Zelda refused to tell him where it is. To get the information out of her, he brought in a wizard to interrogate her. Unable to find out any information, the wizard put a sleeping spell on her, which also led to his own death. Unable to reverse the spell, the prince had his sister locked in the castle tower in the hope that she would one day awaken. In memory of this tragedy, he decreed that all female members of the royal family would henceforth be called Zelda. Impa says that the mark on Link's hand means that he is the chosen hero to awaken Zelda. She gives Link a chest with six crystals and ancient writings that say each crystal must be taken to a different palace in Hyrule. This opens the way to the Great Palace, which contains the Triforce of Courage, which has the power to awaken the enchanted Zelda. Link takes the crystals and sets out to return them to their palaces. Meanwhile, the followers of Ganon try to kill Link, because if they sprinkle his blood on Ganon's ashes, their master will supposedly rise again. Eventually, Link restores the crystals in the six palaces, and with the crystals in place, the entrance to the Great Palace is opened. After venturing deep inside, Link must fight and defeat a shadowy doppelganger of himself known as Dark Link. After Dark Link is defeated, Link retrieves the Triforce and uses it to awaken Zelda, who embraces Link as a curtain falls before them.
