Tales of the Unknown: Volume I - The Bard's Tale

Tales of the Unknown: Volume I, better known as "The Bard's Tale", is an RPG originally developed for the Apple II by Interplay Productions in 1985. It was quickly ported to numerous other platforms and became very successful. This was partly because it featured unprecedented 3D graphics with partially animated character portraits and addictive gameplay. It also helped that the game was available on the Commodore 64 - the most successful game console at the time, while its main competitor, the Ultima series, was not.

Story

The Bard's Tale is a typical dungeon crawl game, in which the objective is to gain experience and improve the characters' abilities through battles and monsters. To do this, you'll have to work through a number of mazes, solve puzzles and improve your equipment. In this particular dungeon crawl, the story revolves around the evil wizard Mangar, who must be defeated by a small group of untried young warriors, magic users, some bards and some rogues under the player's leadership. Mangar has brought evil creatures to the city of Skara Brae and cast a spell of Eternal Winter that isolates Skara Brae from outside help.
