Syphon Filter

Syphon Filter

Syphon Filter is a third-person shooter stealth video game developed by Eidetic and published by 989 Studios exclusively for PlayStation. The plot centers on special agents Gabriel "Gabe" Logan and Lian Xing, who are assigned by the US government to arrest a German international terrorist.

Story

Gabriel Logan and Lian Xing are Agency agents on the trail of Erich Rhoemer, an international terrorist. In August 1999, Agent Ellis attempted to infiltrate Rhoemer's drug business in Guácimo, Costa Rica, but was discovered and executed by former KGB agent Mara Aramov. Rhoemer then hired Anton Girdeux, a French mercenary, to burn down the plantation to hide the evidence of their Syphon Filter research. In Washington, D.C., Edward Benton, the Agency's deputy director, informs Agency Director Thomas Markinson and a shadowy, nameless figure about Logan's mission. A few weeks later, Gabe and Lian investigate a mysterious viral outbreak in the Himalayas, with only one survivor. (Lian describes this as impossible). The game begins a month after the events in Costa Rica. Rhoemer and his terrorists have launched an attack on Washington, D.C.. Gabe defeats Pavel Kravitch, Rhoemer's communications expert, and gains access to the Washington Metro. There, an explosive device goes off and Gabe is trapped underground. He pursues Aramov and catches her in the tunnels before heading to a nearby park to help defuse several viral bombs, where he learns that Aramov has escaped custody. On the way to the Freedom Monument, Gabe defeats Jorge Marcos, Rhoemer's trigger man, before incinerating Girdeaux. Lab results show that the Syphon Filter is a deadly next-generation biological weapon capable of targeting specific populations. Jonathan Phagan, the CEO and founder of PHARCOM, attends a gala at his new Expo Center Museum in New York City, where he is captured by Aramov and Benton is revealed to be a double agent. Gabe kills Benton and frees Phagan, but Aramov, who was captured, escapes custody again. Gabe goes to Rhoemer's secret base in Rozova, Kazakhstan. He kills Rhoemer's commander Vladislav Gabrek and destroys the base, but Lian is captured and presumably killed by Rhoemer. Gabe is then sent to infiltrate Rhoemer's stronghold in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, which is an abandoned cathedral. Gabe injects virus patients with what he is convinced is an antidote and descends deeper into the cathedral to rescue Lian. They also find Phagan, who is later killed by Aramov. She decides to help Gabe and Lian, since she has nowhere else to go. Gabe then infiltrates the PHARCOM warehouses in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where PHARCOM security is battling Rhoemer's men. Gabe learns that Markinson, who had secretly negotiated with Rhoemer to get the Syphon filter for the agency, got Gabe to inject the patients with potassium chloride. Rhoemer reveals that he has captured a nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile from the Soviet Union. Rhoemer shoots Markinson and starts the launch sequence for the missile. Gabe can't stop the launch, so his only hope is to initiate the rocket's self-destruct sequence once it's in the upper atmosphere. Gabe succeeds in destroying the rocket. Rhoemer, furious at Logan's interference, challenges him to a final showdown. Gabe manages to kill him and avert World War III. In a post-credits scene, the shadowy figure from the beginning of the game holds a sample of Syphon Filter at Agency headquarters, along with Aramov, who laughs.
