Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a Star Trek simulation game for the PC that simulates the life of a typical Starfleet cadet. The objective of the game is to learn the basics of starship navigation, to eventually become the captain of your own ship. It includes a simulation battle mode where the player can control and fight ships of their choice. It is also the first time that CGI movies have been shot in free motion in a video game. The movies in the game, directed by Martin Denning, represented a breakthrough in live-action CGI at the time.

Story

The player assumes the role of human cadet David Forester, who leads a group of cadets at Starfleet Command School in San Francisco. The player must pass all simulated missions, optionally including the infamous Kobayashi Maru scenario. Scenarios include simple combat situations as well as a re-enactment of Kirk's near-catastrophic starship confrontation with Khan Noonien Singh, which Kirk ruefully admits was designed to teach cadets to avoid his grave mistake that nearly sank his ship. In addition, Forester must keep his crew in check between simulator scenarios and prevent personality conflicts from interfering with team performance by choosing the right dialogue options during cutscenes. The cadet crew consists of a Vulcan science officer named Sturek, an Andorian communications officer named Vanda M'Giia, and an aloof and shy human engineer Robin Brady, with Trill Jana Akton at the helm and human Geoff Corin at navigation. In the course of the game, it is possible to thwart the machinations of the Vanguard - a fanatical terrorist group whose goal is to overthrow the Federation government and install Kirk as a despot - and investigate the cause of the increasing tensions around the Klingon Neutral Zone. On the other hand, it is possible to be dismissed from the Academy in disgrace if you make the wrong choice during certain full-motion video sequences.
