Star Trek - Armada

Star Trek - Armada

Star Trek: Armada is a real-time strategy game published by Activision in 2000. The game's look is mainly based on Star Trek: The Next Generation and includes some of the main characters and ships. The playable factions include the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire and the Borg. The game received positive reviews and was called one of the better Star Trek games.

Story

The plot references several mediums in the Star Trek universe and includes plot elements from the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as the then-recently released film Star Trek: Insurrection. After the Dominion War, the Federation turns to reconstruction. But suddenly a Federation time ship, the USS Premonition, emerges from the future and is attacked by the Borg. Captain Jean-Luc Picard, commanding the USS Enterprise-E, comes to its aid. The Premonition's captain, Thaddeus Demming, warns Picard of an impending Borg invasion. Picard then repels a first Borg attack on a Federation outpost. Elsewhere, Commander Worf helps defend the Ba'ku homeworld from the Son'a, after which he is informed of the Enterprise's discovery. On his way back to Qo'nos, he is ambushed in a dangerous sector of space by his old enemy Toral, who is trying to take over the Klingon Empire with a forged sword from Kahless. Toral ambushes Chancellor Martok after another Borg raid and another Klingon civil war ensues. After a massive battle for the Klingon homeworld, Toral is defeated. He retreats to the Neutral Zone and reveals that he was aided by the Romulan Star Empire. Hostilities break out between the Klingons and the Romulans. Meanwhile, the Romulans encounter a stable omegaparticle, a source of nearly unlimited power. The particle, first discovered by a Ferengi mining guild, is to be sold to the Cardassians; the Tal Shiar sends Admiral Sela to secure it before that happens. Sela captures the omegaparticle and takes it to a fortified Romulan base despite interference from the Borg. She allies with the Borg, who promise the particle after they destroy Toral's remaining forces, but she betrays them and attacks them after Toral is defeated. The Borg, eager to secure the particle at any cost, assimilate a Dominion cloning facility and use it to clone Locutus, Jean-Luc Picard's former title when he was assimilated. With Locutus at the head of their armada, the Borg take the Omega Particle from the Romulans and assimilate Ambassador Spock, who tries to mediate between the Klingons and Romulans. Without him, war breaks out between the two empires, and the Borg are able to invade the Sol system. Locutus and his armada defeat the Federation fleet, kill Worf and Demming, and assimilate Earth. However, Picard and the Enterprise manage to escape through a temporal vortex created by the Premonition. By traveling back in time, the Enterprise prevents Spock's assimilation. Picard and Spock manage to forge an alliance between the Romulans and the Klingons, and together the three governments beat back the invasion of Earth. The combined forces of the Klingons, Romulans, and Federation push the Borg out of the Alpha Quadrant and capture a transwarp gate that takes them to Unimatrix One, the center of the Borg collective. There, they discover that the Omega Particle powers the Borg war machine. Joining forces, they destroy the Omega Particle, but Locutus travels back in time before he can be defeated. Back in time, Locutus, in a Borg sphere, attempts to kill Picard aboard the USS Enterprise-D shortly after the Farpoint mission. Locutus is thwarted, however, by the USS Premonition, which, unaffected by the changes in the timeline, tracks Locutus back in time and destroys his ship. When the battle-weary Premonition returns to the "present" and finds that everything has returned to normal, Demming sends the ship and crew back to a better future. The game ends with a final log entry from Picard noting the Premonition's departure and the possible disintegration of the Klingon-Romulan alliance, though Picard notes that "only time will tell if the peace will last or not."
