SoulCalibur

SoulCalibur

SoulCalibur is a 3D weapon-based fighting game developed by Project Soul and produced by Namco. It is the second game in the Soul series, preceded by Soul Edge (1996). It originally appeared in arcades in 1998 and ran on Namco System 12 hardware. In 1999 it was ported to the Dreamcast with improved graphics and new features. The North American version was released in September 1999 as a launch title for the Dreamcast and was part of the new console's successful launch. Since 2008, it has been available as a downloadable title on the Xbox Live marketplace on the Xbox 360. The title introduced many innovations to the fighting game genre, including a strong emphasis on weapons and a unique eight-way movement system. Soulcalibur is widely considered one of the best Dreamcast titles and is one of the most critically acclaimed fighting games of all time.

Story

The mystical sword of legends, the "Soul Edge," fell into the hands of the feared pirate Cervantes de Leon of Spain. For the next 25 years, he slumbered in the remains of a Spanish port city, taking the souls of those who reached him in search of the sword. His reign of terror was soon to begin, but through the combined efforts of the Greek divine warrior Sophitia Alexandra and the Japanese ninja Taki, he was stopped and killed, breaking one of the twin blades of the Soul Edge. Just as it was about to tear itself apart, the young Prussian knight Siegfried Schtauffen approached the port city and fought Cervantes, whose corpse had been briefly revived by the will of Soul Edge. After emerging victorious from the battle, Siegfried turned his attention to his sword. The moment he picked up the hilt of the cursed blade, Soul Edge caused a bright pillar of light to rise into the sky. It was known as the "evil seed" and brought with it disaster and death. Three years after these events, Soul Edge uses Siegfried as its host, and now Siegfried is Nightmare, a knight in azure armor with a horribly deformed right arm. Europe plunges into a maelstrom of carnage as he and his followers claim souls to strengthen the blade in its weakened state. Unbeknownst to them, a group of warriors meet on their journey to stop Soul Edge, and with them three sacred weapons reunite.
