Story

A year after Ninja Gaiden Black, master blacksmith Muramasa opens a store in Tokyo, Japan. A CIA agent named Sonia enters the store and asks about the whereabouts of Ryu Hayabusa, until members of the Black Spider ninja clan attack the store and kidnap her. Dragon ninja Ryu fails to stop Sonia's kidnapping and rushes through the skyscrapers of Tokyo to rescue the agent, who informs him of an attack on Hayabusa Village by the Black Spider ninjas, who want to steal the demon statue they possess and protect. Ryu returns home to find his father, Joe Hayabusa, in a duel with Genshin, the leader of the Black Spider ninja clan. Unfortunately, the demon statue is stolen by the queen of the great fiends and ruler of blood, Elizébet, and Joe urges his son to get the statue back at any cost. Ryu travels the world with Sonia to find Elizébet and the demon statue, encountering legions of Black Spider ninjas, fiends, and three other Great Fiends: Alexei, the graceful ruler of lightning, Volf, the invincible ruler of storm, and Zedonius, the malevolent ruler of flame. Ryu tracks Elizébet down in South America, where she offers the demon statue to the infernal high priest Dagra Dai in order to resurrect the ancient nemesis Vazdah. Elizébet duels Ryu and he defeats her, but Elizébet announces her return. An overlooked Genshin explains that the fiends want to resurrect the arch-enemy, who supposedly emerges from Mount Fuji in Japan. The mountain is also the place that connected both the Black Spider Clan and the Dragon Lineage. Ryu returns home and warns Sonia not to follow him. As Ryu overlooks fire-breathing Mount Fuji, Ayane enters with the Eye of the Dragon, a gift from Joe Hayabusa, and Ryu attaches the relic to his Dragon Sword so that it is once again the True Dragon Sword. On the way to the top of the mountain, Ryu meets Genshin, who is waiting for him at the entrance of the crater. As Mount Fuji erupts, Genshin reveals to Ryu that he never cared for the "Arch Enemy's Tantrums" and that their moment has finally come. The two ninjas fight to the death before Genshin drops dead and Ryu leaps into Mount Fuji. Elizébet appears over the dead Genshin and wants to revive him as a fiend, while Ryu descends into Mount Fuji. Ryu fights his way past hordes of fiends and single-handedly defeats Zedonius, Volf and Alexei and rescues a captured Sonia. He instructs her to stay put and not move. Ryu goes to another room and finds a resurrected Genshin, who has turned into an ogre and is back for a fourth and final fight. The two ninja engage in another exhausting fight that ends with Ryu knocking Genshin down, even splitting his armor in the face. Genshin and Ryu are deadly opponents, but in Genshin's final moment, they respect each other as ninja. Genshin tells Ryu that all of his actions were to strengthen the Black Spider Clan as a whole (his goal) and that he has no regrets in pursuing that goal. He recognizes Ryu as a great warrior and, in support of his cause, gives him the cursed blade of the arch-enemy to use before he dies. An angry Elizébet appears and rebukes the Black Spider ninja for losing despite his power. Ryu attacks Elizébet and angrily slashes her into red dust with the combination of his own dragon sword and Genshin's Archfiend blade. He says that the Overlord has more to live for than she does. On his journey to the Underworld, Ryu confronts and defeats Dagra Dai, who is almost finished resurrecting the Archfiend. As a last resort, the High Priest of Hells offers his life to Vazdah, and the Archfiend is reborn. Ryu defeats the monster and makes his way to the surface with Sonia, but a drop of his blood from an open wound accidentally splashes onto the fiend and revives Vazdah, who rises to the summit in his true form. Amidst the erupting Mount Fuji, Ryu faces off against the archenemy in a climatic duel to decide the fate of humanity, and wins. Sonia and Ryu reunite and climb to the top of the mountain together to witness the sunrise. In a post-credits scene, Ryu plants Genshin's nemesis blade in the ground amidst a field of countless blades embedded in the ground and bows out of respect to the Black Spider Overlord. The dragon ninja takes one last look at him before disappearing into the mist. The story of Ryu Hayabusa continues in Ninja Gaiden 3
