Lumines

Lumines

Lumines is a block-dropping game that at first glance reminds us of Columns and Tetris. A 2 x 2 square (an o-tetromino) made up of four smaller blocks is dropped onto the playing field, which can look different depending on the level or skin. The small blocks that make up the larger blocks have one of two different colors. The goal is to rotate and align the blocks to create 2x2 squares of the same color, which can span multiple blocks and even share blocks. For example, if you get a 2x3 area with matching blocks, the middle part will "split" with the left and right halves, forming two 2x2 squares. After the "timeline" synchronized with the music passes over the matching blocks, they disappear. When too many non-matching blocks pile up so that no more blocks can fall onto the board, the game ends. If part of a falling block hits an obstacle, the unobstructed part of the block splits off and continues to fall. More points are awarded if you make the largest number of squares during a "timeline" sweep. You get more points if you keep clearing squares during successive sweeps of the timeline. Bonuses are also given if you reduce all remaining tiles to a single color or remove all inactive tiles from the screen altogether. Occasionally, a block will fall with a special square in one of the two colors with a "jewel" in the center. When this square is cleared as part of a matching 2x2 square, all individual blocks of the same color that are horizontally or vertically adjacent to the matching 2x2 square or to an adjacent square are cleared without scoring points. This allows for both large bonuses, since there are usually several blocks of the other color when they are cleared, and for the player to recover if the board becomes too cluttered.
