Lumines Electronic Symphony takes advantage of the PlayStation Vita's new features, such as the touchpad on the back, while retaining the classic front controls already familiar from the first Lumines. Lumines Electronic Symphony now uses animated 3D blocks instead of 2D sprites. The game uses the front touchscreen controls to move and rotate blocks, but also supports analog controls and the D-pad. In previous Lumines titles, the player unlocked skins based on how well they could achieve each skin. In Lumines Electronic Symphony, however, an experience point system has been integrated. Now, all the points a player earns in a session are converted into experience points, unlocking additional skins and avatars as they level up. Each avatar is assigned a single-player and a multiplayer skill. Players unlock additional avatars and find the abilities that best fit their play style. Q Entertainment has hired design firm BUILD (founded by former Designers Republic and Psygnosis members) to create much of the marketing material for the game, such as the new logo, in-game font, and graphic elements for the packaging design.
