Story

On his sister's birthday, a boy's village in Oakvale is raided by bandits who kill the boy's entire family. An old Hero, Maze, rescues the boy and sees great potential in him; Maze trains the boy to be a Hero at the Hero's Guild. Years pass; after honing his skills, Maze informs Hero about a blind seer living in a bandit camp near Oakvale and advises him to infiltrate the bandit camp. To his surprise, the blind seer is actually his older sister Theresa, taken in by Twinblade, a former Hero and current bandit king. After a showdown with Twinblade, the hero is given the choice of killing the bandit or sparing him. Later in the hero's life, after gaining more recognition among the people of Albion, he is invited to fight in the arena, where he meets the legendary hero Jack of Blades, who runs the arena fights. As a final challenge, Jack pits the hero against his rival, who was once also his childhood friend/roommate in the guild - Whisper; if the hero defeats her, he can kill her or spare her. The hero learns that Jack of Blades himself destroyed Oakvale during his childhood; with Theresa's help, the hero finds his mother alive in Bargate Prison. The hero is captured during the rescue attempt and spends a year or more in prison before finally escaping. Maze turns out to be a traitor and works with Jack. Maze kidnaps Theresa. After defeating Maze, the hero is led to a final confrontation with Jack in which his mother is killed. Jack reveals that the Sword of Aeons can only be wielded if it receives the Archon's blood. The Sword of Aeons is said to be a very powerful sword of destruction. After the death of their mother, the hero and Theresa are the only two remaining descendants of Archon, and if Jack destroys them both, the sword will be even more powerful. After defeating Jack, the hero must choose whether to keep the Sword of Aeons by killing his sister, or throw it forever into a portal created by Jack of Blades' death. Depending on the hero's orientation and the player's decision to use or destroy the sword, there are a total of four different endings. Once the credits roll, players can continue their game. In the special edition The Lost Chapters, the story continues. After Jack's defeat, the hero must find his way to the Northern Expanses to help a legendary hero named Scythe stop an unknown great evil. Should the hero discard the Sword of Aeons, he will have the opportunity to obtain the sword "Avo's Tear", a sword of similar design and power, but aligned with light instead of dark. Avo is said to be a god that represents the light side. After a series of quests centered around this new evil, you learn that Jack of Blades has returned. He must defeat Jack of Blades a second time, because Jack has returned from the dead in the form of a dragon. After Jack's death, the hero uses Jack's mask to capture Jack's soul. Scythe tells him that the battle is not over and that he must destroy the mask. The hero then has the choice of putting on the mask - and being devoured by Jack in the process - or destroying it forever along with Jack.
